University of Ottawa Scholarships for International Students

The University of Ottawa (uOttawa or U of O), situated in Canada’s capital, is the largest multilingual (English-French) university in the world. uOttawa offers a diverse selection of 550 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with many of them consistently top ranking in Canada. International students looking to study at any of these programs can apply for University of Ottawa scholarships. This university is among the top 10 universities in the country, and among the top 150 in the world. As a bilingual university, students are encouraged to learn French, one of Canada’s official languages, but most programs are still offered in English.

University of Ottawa Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of Ottawa

1. Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Varies per program
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • International students with a valid student permit
    • Accepted to a French or French immersion program in Fall 2021 or later
    • Enrolled full-time
    • Taking at least three classes (9 units) in French

The Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship is granted automatically to eligible international Francophone students enrolling at the University of Ottawa. Renewal of the full scholarship amount is possible until the completion of the undergraduate program (12 payments) as long as the grantee can consistently meet the requirements each academic year. This University of Ottawa scholarship may also be renewed at 50% of its total value if the student only enrolls part-time in the Spring-Summer term and if they continue to take at least two classes (6 units) in French.

2. President’s Scholarship for International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: $30,000 ($7,500 per year)

    • International students with a valid student visa
    • Enrolled full-time in a direct-entry faculty or integrated program offered with a direct-entry faculty
    • Have a minimum admission average of 92%

The President’s Scholarship is one of the most distinguished awards granted by the University of Ottawa to one of its outstanding international undergraduate students who prove to be a perfect embodiment of the school’s values and is committed to serving the community through excellent leadership and active participation in extracurricular activities.

The grantee will receive $7,500 each academic year and will be allowed to renew the scholarship if they are able to maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 or higher. The scholarship may also be renewed at 50% of its annual value if the student has a CGPA of 8.0 to 8.4 at the end of the A.Y. Second to fourth finalists will receive a one-time award amounting to $1,500. Applications may be sent through the university’s Online Scholarships and Bursaries page.

3. Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: $26,000 ($6,500 per year)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • International students with a valid student permit
    • Enrolled full-time in a direct-entry faculty or integrated program offered with a direct-entry faculty
    • Have a minimum admission average of 92%

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to one excellent international student each year, someone in which the university believes will be a role model of their values and demonstrates leadership qualities.

The recipient will receive $6,500 each academic year and will be allowed to renew the scholarship if a CGPA of 8.5 or higher is maintained. This scholarship at the University of Ottawa may also be renewed at 50% of its annual value if the student has a CGPA of 8.0 to 8.4 at the end of the A.Y. The second to fourth finalists will receive a one-time award of $1,500. Applications may be sent through the university’s Online Scholarships and Bursaries page.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Ottawa

1. Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship

    • International students with a valid student permit
    • Accepted admission in the Fall term of 2021 or later in a French program OR
    • Have a secondary or postsecondary diploma in French with a minimum of two (2) years of study

The Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship covers a partial amount of the Master’s enrollees’ tuition based on their chosen program. Qualified recipients are automatically awarded the scholarship and may renew this for a maximum of six (6) installments as long as the student remains enrolled full-time each term and is taking their compulsory classes in French.

2. Special Merit Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria: International Master’s and Ph.D. students

The Special Merit Scholarship is an available financial aid open to all international postgraduate students at the University of Ottawa. All eligible enrollees are automatically considered once they have accepted admission into the university. This University of Ottawa scholarship amount and duration vary and will be disclosed once the offer is presented to the candidate.

3. Admission Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Minimum value of $72,000
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Canadian students, permanent residents, protected persons or members of a diplomatic corps, and international students
    • Have an admission average of 8.0 or higher
    • Enrolled full-time and without interruption throughout the scholarship (12 consecutive terms)

The University of Ottawa awards its excellent doctoral students with the Admission Scholarship that values at a minimum of $72,000 in total for four years. This grant is divided into two components. A portion of the scholarship totaled at $9,000 each year is paid for by the Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, while the other half is offered in the form of assistantships or internal scholarships amounting to a minimum of $9,000 annually.

As of 2021, these three (3) discussed scholarships are the only internal scholarships offered by uOttawa. However, other external scholarships and financial aids are available to postgraduate international students in the university.
