How Do I Get a HKUST Scholarship?

Most scholarships at HKUST don’t require additional application steps. You only need to send your admission requirements to the university in order to be considered for their academic scholarships. Meanwhile, non-academic scholarships might have a separate application process. Undergraduate Scholarships at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

1. University Admissions Scholarship Scheme for Non-Local Students

  • Scholarship Amount: Varies
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students who are applying for admission to HKUST in September are automatically considered for this scholarship.

HKUST is offering financial support to international students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in the university. This scholarship is given to students from different countries who have excellent academic records.

This HKUST scholarship does not require an application. HKUST will review each student’s academic background together with their college applications, and once they have selected the recipients of this scholarship, they will send out the admission offers along with the award.

2. Kerry Holdings Limited Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$70,000-115,000 per year (renewable for 4 years)
  • Eligibility Criteria: Undergraduate students from one of the following faculties: School of Business and Management, School of Engineering, School of Science, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, or Interdisciplinary Programs Office.

This scholarship at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is awarded to international students based on their academic competence. It is renewable each year if the students maintain a Cumulative Grade Average of 3.00 and above.

3. World Bachelor in Business Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$52,500-210,000 per year

This scholarship is given to both local and non-local students who demonstrate excellence in academics, community service, and leadership. Candidates are automatically considered and do not need to apply for the scholarship.

Qualified students are either given a partial or full tuition fee discount, and the scholarship is renewable for 4 years if the students maintain a good academic record upon the program directors’ approval.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

1. Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$252,000 per year for Master of Philosophy students, HK$97,188-145,782 with full tuition discount for Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Public Management students, and HK$97,188 with full tuition discount for Master of Public Policy students
  • Eligibility Criteria: Students from East, South, or Southeast Asian countries who are pursuing a full-time master’s program at HKUST

The Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) is an initiative of the Bai Xian Asia Institute (BXAI), which chose HKUST as one of its partner universities in Asia. AFLSP aims to foster intercultural relationships between Asian students and higher academic institutions, and former scholars of this program are citizens of South Korea, Japan, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

10 students are picked each year, and the coverage of the scholarship includes tuition, housing, and allowance costs. Candidates are chosen based on their academic standing, substantial experience in leadership and community service, and an excellent command of the English language.

This HKUST scholarship program is accepting applications at the Online Admission System until January 31. Submit the completed application form along with a short introductory video (maximum of 3 minutes) stating your reasons for applying to the program. A reference letter attesting to the applicant’s academic and extracurricular background is also required. Candidates will then be interviewed by the HKUST and BXAI panels before being officially selected for the scholarship.

Once chosen, students must fulfill specific duties as required by the program. They must complete 1 East Asian language subject other than their native language, and at least 1 of the following requirements: a study trip or leadership training program recognized by BXAI, or a non-credit individual research paper focusing on East Asia or international relations. They must also finish an international relations course, a specialized seminar series, or a research project about issues relevant to East Asia. Lastly, they must fully participate in the three-week BXAI Summer Program at the end of their 1st year of graduate studies.

2. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$322,800 per year (renewable for 4 years) with a conference travel allowance of HK$13,500 per year
  • Eligibility Criteria: Doctoral students who fulfilled the general admission and language requirements of HKUST are eligible for this scholarship.

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree with a good academic record from an institution recognized by HKUST, and must have taken any of the following language proficiency exams: IELTS with a total score of 6.5 and sub-scores of 5.5, or TOEFL with a minimum score 80 for Internet-Based Test and 550 for Paper-Based Test.

HKUST is now accepting alternative language exams such as Duolingo English Test (with a minimum score of 105). If the applicants have English as their first language or graduated from an institution with English as its medium of instruction, they are not required to take language proficiency exams.

Applicants must also secure a reference number and scholarship application form from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and submit them to the Online Admission System by December 1. Candidates who pass the admission interviews will be announced at the Research Grants Committee’s official website.

3. Postgraduate Studentships

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$216,360 per year (maximum of 2 years for Master of Philosophy students and 4 years for PhD candidates)
  • Eligibility Criteria: Full-time MPhil or PhD students with outstanding academic record and English language proficiency
  • Degree Offered: MPhil and PhD

This scholarship at HKUST is awarded to full-time research students who need financial support for the entire duration of their postgraduate studies. Each recipient will be trained as Graduate Teaching Assistants, and they will also be given annual subsidies to cover their tuition fees, lodging, and daily living expenses.
