Zhejiang University Scholarships for International Students

As a premier Chinese school, Zhejiang University is a popular destination for international students looking to earn a top-quality education. Founded in 1867, it is one of China’s oldest higher education institutions and is home to over 400 programs and 200 student organizations. Consistently ranking as one of the top universities in China, it also places as one of the top universities in the world. The prestigious school is located on the eastern coast of China in the city of Hangzhou.

With an interest in growing international talent, Zhejiang University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships, encouraging high-performing students to apply for the chance to become alumni. Many of these scholarships offer full tuition, campus housing, and medical insurance. Some also include a monthly stipend depending on the type of degree being pursued. For all of the scholarships listed for Zheijang University, there is no need to submit a hard copy of any application materials, and hard copies of application materials will not be considered for approval.

Undergraduate Scholarships at Zhejiang University for International Students

1. Silk Road Chinese Government Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition, free double-room accommodation in the Donghe dormitory, a monthly stipend of RMB2500 yuan, and comprehensive medical insurance.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Eligible applicants are non-Chinese citizens from “The Belt and Road” countries. Potential applicants must be high school graduates between the ages of 18 and 25 years old who have displayed exemplary performance in school.

The Silk Road Chinese Government Scholarship is open to students in the ‘Belt and Road’ countries in several undergraduate programs, including civil engineering, digital media, and applied physics, among many others.

To apply for this scholarship available for Zheijang University, the following documents must be submitted with the application: softcopies of a graduation certificate and transcripts, a Chinese proficiency test of at least HSK3, a photocopy of the applicant’s passport, two letters of recommendation in either English or Chinese, a research proposal or academic study plan at a minimum of 200 words, and a Foreigner Physical Examination Form.

2. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: In addition to waived tuition and free campus housing, a monthly stipend will be granted based on the existing standard (typically RMB1,000-2,000 yuan)
  • Eligibility Criteria: Eligible applicants are non-Chinese citizens, between the ages of 16 and 35, and in good physical and mental health.

Available as both an undergraduate and postgraduate program, the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship was funded by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) to meet the demand for Chinese language instructors abroad.

Included among the required application materials is a personal letter of 1500 words or more, written in Chinese, detailing study and work history, the reason for the application, and a study proposal. Online registration opens on March 1st. This Zheijang University scholarship offers full and partial tuition coverage.

3. Scholarship for Diligent Study

  • Scholarship Amount: RMB500 yuan
  • Eligibility Criteria: The applicant must be an officially registered and self-funded Chinese language ZUST student. They must have received final scores above 85 points for every course taken. Maximum absences should not exceed 30 teaching periods, including absences due to sick leave, personal or family affairs, or truancy.

To apply, students must complete the Specialized Scholarship Application Form. If the student has already been awarded the Scholarship for Outstanding Chinese Language, they are not eligible for the Scholarship for Diligent Study in the same school term. The scholarship will be reviewed every term, and application materials must be submitted before June 30th or January 10th without exception.

There are numerous undergraduate scholarships at Zheijang University available to international students. Some, like the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, are available as both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. There are, however, several scholarships that are exclusively postgraduate.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Zhejiang University

1. Chinese Government Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: In addition to waived tuition and free campus housing, a monthly stipend of RMB3,000 – 3,500 will be granted based on degree type.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must first meet the admittance requirements for Zhejiang University after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
  • Degree Offered: Masters and Doctorate.

The Chinese Government Scholarship was designed to further curate international talent. This scholarship at Zheijang University is offered as both full and partial tuition coverage. The application deadline is March 31st, after which Zhejiang University will review submissions and select applicants based on academic performance and individual competitiveness, among other factors.

2. Zhejiang University Scholarship for International Postgraduate Students

  • Scholarship Amount: Full or partial tuition coverage, free campus accommodation, medical insurance, and an allowance for monthly living expenses of RMB1,700 – 2,000 yuan.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To apply, students must first qualify for postgraduate programs at Zhejiang University, and not have been awarded any other scholarships.

The deadline for submission is March 31st, and awardees will be announced in late July or early August. Please note that laboratory materials or internship costs are not covered with the scholarship, and will need to be paid for by the student. Though it is not required, it is recommended that applicants submit their test scores for the GRE/ NTS-GAT exams along with the obligatory documents.

3. Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship for Graduate Students

  • Scholarship Amount: RMB30,000 yuan
  • Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship is available to postgraduate students who have already paid for their tuition at Zhejiang University and can obtain letters of recommendation from two professors.

Once a student is already enrolled in and paid tuition for a degree program, they are eligible to apply for RMB30,000 yuan of Zheijang University scholarship. For those opting to attend courses in Chinese, an HSK language certificate is required for acceptance. Other credible Chinese language certifications or certificates may also be included.
