The University of Tübingen (formally known as Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen), founded in 1477, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. They are one of the eleven German Excellence Universities and are known to be significant contributors to research especially in the fields of science, archaeology, and artificial intelligence. At the University of Tübingen, over 200 courses are offered, from undergraduate to postgraduate degrees, as well as international courses. The student population at the university is more than 27,000, with more than 3,500 of those who are international students.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the university has been understanding and finding ways to ease the financial burden that some of its students may have experienced. With this, they have started to grant tuition deferral and waivers for those who have been economically or physically affected by the pandemic. Refunds are also granted if the student has already paid for their fees for the upcoming semester. Students must reach out to the university for approval.

2. The Germany Scholarship (Deutschlandstipendium)

The Germany Scholarship or Deutschlandstipendium, equally funded by the federal government and private sponsors, aims to promote the country as a destination for quality education. Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Tübingen

2. Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is an agency for green ideas and projects, a reform-political future workshop, and an international network. Named after late Heinrich Böll, Nobel prize winner and writer, the foundation aims to follow in his footsteps in having moral courage and unconditional appreciation for art and culture. The foundation promotes art and culture as a medium for political education and expression of social self-understanding. The scholarship they offer is for Master’s and Ph.D. students who want to contribute to politics, science, and society.

This scholarship available at the University of Tübingen is open to both German and international students who are pursuing their postgraduate studies in a German university. Ph.D. research opportunities abroad are also available. Applications are accepted twice each year and are completed online.

3. Gerda Henkel Foundation Ph.D. Scholarship

    • Has an overall Master’s grade of 1.5 (foreign grade certificates will be assessed separately)
    • Must be 28 years old or younger at the time of completion of their Master’s studies

The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in 1976 by Lisa Maskell, in honor of her late mother Gerda Henkel. The foundation focuses on supporting excellent students who find interest in pursuing an education in the field of historical humanities. They offer a number of research grants, fellowships, and scholarships each year, one of which is those for Ph.D. students.

Annually, 50 Ph.D. scholarships are made available to aspiring students who are planning to do a research project in an eligible field of study. Applications can be sent online throughout the year– there are no deadlines. Some of the application requirements include a description of the research proposal, CV, university certificates, and two references. The funding period for the scholarship is two years, but an extension of 12 months may be granted in some justifiable cases. The scholarship amounts to EUR 1,600 per month. Additional allowances for those with children or required to travel may also be granted.
