University of Sussex Scholarships for International Students

The University of Sussex is amongst the newer institutions in the UK founded in 1959 and has immediately received its Royal Charter two years later in 1961. The university takes pride in being one of the leading research universities in England, with over 75% of their activities recognized as world-leading and globally excellent based on the Research Excellence Framework 2014. They offer over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs and over 200 clubs and organizations that aim to cater to each student’s interests and passion.

Based on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019, the University of Sussex is also one of the most international institutions in the world, catering to almost 6,000 students from 160 countries or one-third of their total population. Through the years, the University of Sussex has garnered several high rankings in different measures, confirming their excellence in education and research.

To name a few, they are at the 21st spot in the UK and 151st in the world based on The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. They are also ranked 44th by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 and The Guardian University League Table 2022.

University of Sussex Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of Sussex

1. Chancellors International and EU Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 5,000/year
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students

The Chancellors International and EU Scholarships offer 60 scholarships each year to international undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Sussex. Interested applicants must have already been accepted into the university, only after then will the online application form for the scholarship be forwarded by the office.

The selection process for this University of Sussex is merit-based, thus only those with excellent academic standing are considered. Chosen grantees will receive GBP 5,000 each academic year, under the condition that they are enrolled full-time. Students under the University of Sussex Business School or School of Engineering & Informatics are not eligible to apply as these faculties have their separate Chancellors Scholarships.

2. Article 26 Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full international tuition fee waiver and maintenance award of GBP 11,500/year
  • Eligibility Criteria: Forced migrant students

Awarded as a University of Sanctuary in 2020, the University of Sussex takes strong action in supporting forced immigrants and asylum seekers with their school finances and, in its name, becoming a sanctuary or second home for them.

Each year, two undergraduate and one Master’s student is accepted for this scholarship at the University of Sussex and will receive a full international tuition waiver as well as a maintenance award of GBP 11,500. Eligible applicants may submit their online applications after they have secured a slot in one of the university’s programs.

3. Dr. John Birch Music Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 800 cash award and access to the university’s music facilities
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • UK nationals and international students
    • Must be a grade 8 or equivalent in their chosen instrument

In honor of the late Dr. John Birch who was a former music lecturer and organist, the scholarship was founded to support musically-inclined students who are pursuing their degree in the university. Open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, the scholarship awards four musicians each year, regardless of their field of study.

Interested candidates must submit an online application, and those shortlisted will go through an interview and audition. The four scholarship grantees will be awarded GBP 800 and access to the school’s music practice rooms. All applicants who reached the audition stage, regardless if they were accepted or not, will be given the chance to perform in school events or collaborate with other musicians on campus.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Sussex

1. Chancellor’s Masters Scholarship

Annually, the Chancellor’s Masters Scholarship awards 100 students who have been accepted into one of the Master’s programs at the University of Sussex. To be eligible for this scholarship at the University of Sussex, the student must have or will be obtaining a first-class UK Bachelor’s degree, and must have already been accepted into a Master’s program in the university at the time of application.

Along with the accomplished application form, the student should also present their academic achievements, career plans, and interests or extra-curricular activities that relate to their chosen Master’s program. Accepted UK scholars will receive a tuition fee reduction of GBP 3,000, while international scholars will receive GBP 5,000.

2. Draper Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 3,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: UK nationals and international students

The Draper Scholarship selects three deserving students each year who have applied to a Master’s program under the Department of Law at the University of Sussex. Applications are completed online, and selection will be based on the candidate’s experience, academic achievements, and ambition. The three chosen scholars will receive an award of GBP 3,000 in the form of a tuition fee reduction. This may also be combined with other scholarships offered by the university.

3. Fully Funded Ph.D. Studentships in Soft Robotics and Mechatronics

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition coverage and tax-free bursary for living costs
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • UK nationals and international students
    • Must hold at least a second-class undergraduate honor degree and/or a postgraduate Master’s degree in a STEM subject
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

Each year, two University of Sussex scholarships are made available to Ph.D. candidates who are interested in taking up Soft Robotics and Mechatronics. A second-class undergraduate diploma and/or Master’s degree in a STEM subject is required, and those with backgrounds in certain fields of study are prioritized.
