1. Vice Chancellor’s Global Development Scholarship

    • must be a self-funded, full-time, on-campus undergraduate or postgraduate student at the University of Portsmouth

The Vice Chancellor’s Global Development Scholarship caters to students from developing countries. It hopes to encourage their sustainable development by providing financial aid and high-quality education to the best and brightest minds of their societies.

Any citizen of any of the listed countries is eligible for this scholarship, and no separate application will be needed. Once you apply for admission to the University of Portsmouth, you will be automatically considered for the scholarship. The tuition fee reduction of £1600 will be automatically included in your offer letter from the university.

This scholarship is only available for your first year at the University of Portsmouth, whether you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate student. It cannot be combined with any other scholarship.

2. Chancellor’s Global Academic Merit Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: £5000 tuition fee reduction
  • Eligibility Criteria
    • must be a citizen of Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Morocco, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, The Caribbean, Vietnam, or Zimbabwe
    • must be an international student paying international student fees
    • must be a self-funded, full-time, on-campus undergraduate or postgraduate student at the University of Portsmouth

The Chancellor’s Global Academic Merit Scholarship is another undergraduate or postgraduate scholarship aimed at students from developing countries. It is merit-based and celebrates those with excellent academic performance. It hopes to nurture young and innovative scholars to bring about change in their home countries.

You must have already applied for, received, and accepted the admission offer from the University of Portsmouth by the date indicated on the scholarship’s page before you can apply for this scholarship. To apply, you must fill out a separate application form that will also be uploaded on the page. Here, you will be asked for general information about yourself as well as your grades from secondary school (if applying as an undergraduate) or your bachelor’s program (if applying as a postgraduate). Submit this by the indicated deadline as well.

All applicants will be evaluated based on their past academic performances. You may be asked to upload your academic transcripts as proof.

If chosen for the scholarship, you will be receiving the automatic tuition fee reduction when you receive your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies letter from the university. This cannot be used in conjunction with other scholarships at the University of Portsmouth and is only applicable for your first year of studies.

Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Portsmouth

1. Chevening Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: full tuition fee reduction, monthly allowance, round-trip airfare, visa fees, and medical exam fees

    • must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country with plans to return for at least two years after the program
    • must have an undergraduate degree and two years of work experience

The Chevening Scholarship is aimed at international students who wish to take up postgraduate degrees in the United Kingdom. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, it offers fully-funded tuition fees and additional expenses to help develop future leaders and innovators. The University of Portsmouth is just one of many universities covered by this prestigious scholarship.

Start by visiting Chevening’s official website. There, you can find the details on how to apply from your country of domicile, an application timeline, and a handy course tracker. Type in ‘Portsmouth’ to browse through all eligible courses at the University of Portsmouth—pick at least three and apply for all of them. The university recommends you apply for admission before or at the same time as your Chevening application.

Online applications for Chevening open in August and end in November. You may access the application form by creating a new account and looking for your country’s specific page. You must apply using the link on your country’s page.

The first stage of the application involves answering a series of questions about your skills, experiences, and qualifications. You will also be asked about why you want to study at the University of Portsmouth, how it will be beneficial for your career path, and how you intend on using it for the betterment of your community. You will need to impress the scholarships team with clear and concise essays before you can move on to the next step.

The second stage will have you upload important documents to support your application. These include academic transcripts, two professional reference letters, your resume, and other relevant documents. Over the next few months, the scholarship team will be reviewing your documents and your essays to see if you qualify for the third and final stage of the application—the interview.

Chevening will be contacting the local British embassies in your country to invite you for a formal, in-person interview. They will be getting to know you more. They will be asking more in-depth questions about your skills, experiences, and plans for the future. This is also their way of gauging your personality to see if you’re a great fit for Chevening.

You will hear back from Chevening regarding your application by June at the very latest. By this time, you should have already received an offer of admission from the University of Portsmouth. You must submit a copy of this letter to Chevening to receive this scholarship available at the University of Portsmouth.
