Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Waikato

1. The University of Waikato GEMS Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: maximum of 10,000 NZD for tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • enrolled at a GEMS Education Network School in the previous year
    • a first-time applicant for a full-time undergraduate program
    • received Offer of Place from the university
    • does not have a sponsor, credit agreement, study abroad, or student exchange agreement

The University of Waikato’s GEMS Scholarship, which was started in 2018, is intended for students who went to a GEMS Education Network School the year before their tenure. The GEMS Network list of schools is also accessible. The scholarship is only applicable for face-to-face studies; thus, international students who have their classes online are not eligible.

Three students are granted the offer every year. The university will award the scholarship benefit after enrolment. Thus, scholars must pay for their first-year tuition fees and get a student visa. However, during the time of application, applicants must not have paid any fees yet to be eligible. Applicants must submit an online application before visa application, or if already in New Zealand, before enrolling in the university. They must also submit their Offer of Place and personal statement along with the application.

2. University of Waikato International Entrance Scholarship for School Leavers

  • Scholarship Amount: maximum of 20,000 NZD for tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • completed NCEA Level 2 and/or 3 (or equivalent) at a New Zealand high school or pathways college
    • first-time enrollees for full-time studies

The University of Waikato International Entrance Scholarship for School Leavers is automatically granted for international students who completed Year 13 or equivalent at a New Zealand educational institution. Scholars may be considered as global ambassadors for the university.

Scholars will be informed through their Offer of Place and MyWaikato portal. Gap year students and scholarship duration of more than one year may be considered, provided certain conditions are met. Online setup students are not eligible for the scholarship. Also, those with sponsors, guaranteed credit agreements, or other government scholarships are not qualified.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Waikato

1. University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to NZD$15,000 towards tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: new international students
  • Degree Offered: Undergraduate

The University of Waikato also grants tuition fee scholarship for international students, whether they are currently enrolled or planning to enroll at one of the university’s master’s programs. International students must have completed at least 120 units of their studies to be eligible to apply.

2. University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • Undergraduate – Up to 20,000 NZD
    • Postgraduate – Up to 15,000 NZD
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • New, full-time student
    • Received an offer of place
    • At least B+ GPA or equivalent
    • does not have a sponsor, credit agreement, study abroad, or student exchange agreement

This University of Waikato scholarship is intended for outstanding and talented students enrolling in the university for the first time. This grant was established last 2015 to encourage internationalization and promote education, especially for exceptional students. This offer is not applicable for the online class setup.

Before applying, students must not have paid fees yet. Applicants will be evaluated based on academic background and potential as a global ambassador for the university. There are also other conditions when accepted as a scholar. The benefit is intended for tuition fees only. The scholarship duration may be for 1 to 3 years, depending on the approval of the Selection Panel. Online application is submitted along with their offer of a place and personal statement.

3. The New Zealand NCUK University of Waikato Bursary

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $6,000
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • enrolling for full-time students
    • completed NCUK International Foundation, International Year One, or Master’s Preparation program
  • Degree Offered: Undergraduate and Master’s

NCUK is a consortium of universities started in 1987. It is committed to guiding international students and giving them guaranteed access to different institutions around the world. NCUK students are granted qualifications, which allow them to be admitted to partner universities. Those who wish to proceed to the University of Waikato after their studies in NCUK may avail themselves of the New Zealand NCUK University of Waikato Bursary.

There is no separate application for this University of Waikato scholarship as it is made directly through the NCUK. It is also not applicable for the online setup. Undergraduate students may receive the benefits in two installments, while postgraduate students will only have it in one payment. There are also other specifics and conditions to the offer.

3. Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $10,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: full-time students from the South Pacific Nation
  • Degree Offered: Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD

Michael Baldwin was a former staff of the university. He passed away last 2003, but his family continued his commitment to education by establishing the Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship for the University of Waikato last 2004. Applicants for the grant must be from a South Pacific Nation (except Australia and New Zealand) who can contribute to the improvement of their region. They must also prove that they need financial support. Students from Papua New Guinea are preferred.

Students must submit a personal statement, curriculum vitae, proof of citizenship, academic transcripts, and confidential references for the application. Reapplication is possible for previous scholars, but they must also submit all papers related to their studies while being a scholarship recipient.
