Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Indonesia

1. KNB Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 1,500,000 IDR, plus monthly stipend, health insurance, and round trip airfare.
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students meeting the maximum age requirement; Endorsement from the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate; TOEFL score of 80 or equivalent.

Headed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Beasiswa Kemitraan Negara Berkembang or KNB Scholarship was established in 2008 by the government of Indonesia to sponsor promising international students in developing countries. The scholarship aims to hone changemakers in their respective homelands while promoting Indonesian culture and its thrust towards internationalization among the country’s higher institutions.

This University of Indonesia scholarship is open to students of all degrees of study. All scholars must undergo one year of Bahasa training and preparatory classes before the principal degree program. The scholarship duration depends on the degree of study – 8 semesters for Bachelor’s degree scholars, and 4 years for Master’s degree scholars. Doctoral degree scholars can have the scholarship for as long as 6 years, with a maximum extension of 2 semesters on a case-to-case basis.

Students must meet the age requirement and educational attainment expected from each degree program to be eligible. They must also have a TOEFL score of 80 or equivalent. To apply, students must obtain a recommendation letter from the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the students’ home country. This endorsement letter, along with the application form and other required documents, must be submitted online to undergo a selection process. Results will be posted on the KNB official website.

Accepted scholars will receive a one-time settlement allowance of 1,500,000 IDR, along with a monthly stipend for living expenses and book allowances. Health insurance worth 400,000 IDR and round trip airfare to and from Indonesia will also be shouldered by the scholarship.

2. Darmasiswa Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: One-time settlement allowance of 1,000,000 IDR and a monthly allowance of 2,950,000 IDR.
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students of all degrees of study between 18-27 years of age; TOEFL certificate or equivalent

Another initiative by the Ministry of Education and Culture, The Darmasiswa scholarship program was initially established in 1974 to welcome talent exchanges with Southeast Asian nations. By the 1990s, the program expanded to a global audience to further Indonesia’s diplomatic ties with the world while cultivating a global appreciation for the Indonesian language and culture.

International students of all degrees of study between 18-27 years of age with a TOEFL certificate or equivalent are eligible to apply. Interested students must apply online, and submit a resume, a recommendation letter from a professor or educational institution, proof of academic performance, and other relevant documents. They must also submit an essay of a maximum of 500 words on the purpose of their study in Indonesia, as well as a 2-minute video explaining their reasons for applying and how they plan to be an ambassador of Indonesian culture.

For this University of Indonesia scholarship, accepted applicants will receive a one-time settlement allowance of 1,000,000 IDR upon arrival for the program orientation. They will also receive a monthly stipend of 2,950,000 IDR to cover living allowance and boarding assistance. The Ministry of Education and Culture can facilitate the processing of legal permits, while the university can assist students with housing arrangements.

3. AUN-ACTS UI Study Award

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition and admission fees waiver for one semester.
  • Eligibility Criteria: International undergraduate students part of AUN member university; with a nomination from home university; with GPA of 3 or higher.

The AUN-ACTS UI Study Award was established by the ASEAN University Network to encourage knowledge and cultural exchange between the University of Indonesia and other key universities in the Southeast Asian region. This program waives 100% of admission and tuition fees for one semester to deserving students.

All international undergraduate students who are studying in an AUN member university are welcome to apply. Students must have finished one year of study in the AUN partner school with a GPA of 3 or higher and be able to self-finance their studies in Indonesia.

Applications can be downloaded online along with the templates for other supporting documents. Students must submit these forms with their curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, nomination form, and two letters of recommendation, among others. They must also seek endorsement from their home university for the exchange program.
