University of Gothenburg Scholarships for International Students

As one of the oldest of the current Swedish universities, and one of the largest in the Nordic countries, the University of Gothenburg is a popular choice for international studies. It houses 38 different departments and eight faculties. The university is one of the most popular universities in Sweden, receiving the highest number of applicants per study place in many subjects.

International students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels who aspire to become alumni at the University of Gothenburg will find assistance in a few different scholarships, usually offered by the Swedish Institute. The University of Gothenburg is dedicated to producing global leaders and curating international talent.

Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of Gothenburg for International Students

1. Axel Adler Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full coverage of tuition
  • Eligibility Criteria: Students who have applied to full-time bachelor’s degree programs and paid the application fee, selected their top priority program in the international admission round, and have not been awarded any other scholarships are eligible.

The award for this University of Gothenburg scholarship does not include coverage of student housing, travel expenditures, or lab material costs. Once the award has been granted, the scholar does not need to take any additional action in order to apply it to their tuition.

A Letter of Motivation must be submitted along with the application and CV. The letter must highlight the student’s merits, and is used as a deciding factor in distributing the award.

Postgraduate Scholarships

1. The University of Gothenburg Study Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition coverage
  • Eligibility Criteria: Students must have applied for a master’s degree, with the intention of attending full-time.

This scholarship available at the University of Gothenburg is offered by the International Program Office for Education and Training for students attending Swedish universities from other countries in pursuit of a master’s degree. Awardees will also receive an additional stipend of SEK27,000 per study semester.

Applicants will need to submit a CV and a Letter of Motivation with their application. If students have applied for more than one master’s program, they will need to write in a Letter of Motivation for each.

2. Swedish Institute Scholarships For Global Professionals

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fee coverage, plus a monthly payment of SEK10,000 to cover living expenses.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Students from eligible countries applying to one or two year master’s programs may receive this award.

Ambitious, high-achieving students, who are dedicated to becoming recognized leaders in their areas of expertise, are invited to apply for the Swedish Institutes Scholarships For Global Professionals. The primary goal of the scholarship is to curate future global leaders with an emphasis on sustainable development. Funded by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign affairs, only 4-6% of applicants receive this prestigious award.

In addition to the tuition coverage and stipend, awardees of this University of Gothenburg scholarship will benefit from insurance against illness or accident, and be granted membership to the SI Network For Future Global Leaders and the SI Alumni Network. Applicants from certain countries will be granted an additional SEK10,000-15,000 in travel grants.

3. Swedish Institute Scholarships For South Africa (SISSA)

  • Scholarship Amount: Tuition fee coverage, as well as SEK10,000 per month for living expenses.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Citizens of South Africa in pursuit of a master’s degree starting are eligible for the SISSA scholarship.

Applicants must submit their CV, Letter of Motivation, proof of work and leadership experience, and letters of reference to be considered for this University of Gothenburg scholarship. The CV must not exceed three pages. Missing documents will result in the application being discarded.

Priority will be granted to students who have completed their bachelor’s with honors or equivalent from a university in South Africa, and who will receive their master’s degree in the fields of computer science and IT, design (industrial design, architecture, urban/regional planning), engineering, environmental technology, sustainable development, gender studies, nanotechnology, or public health.

Scholarships offered for international students attending the University of Gothenburg make attending a well-known, prestigious establishment possible.
