University of Crete Scholarships for International Students

The University of Crete traces its roots to 1973 and had since then maintained excellence in research and teaching. It has two campuses – the Gallos Campus and the Voutes Campus – with the former being the university’s center. These campuses are now the homes of thousands of students from and beyond Greece.

The university also regularly collaborates with leading institutions from around the world to help further knowledge and training. It is also an active participant in mobility and exchange program activities. These initiatives, along with the culture-rich Crete, expose students to the wonders of Greek and Mediterranean culture.

Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Crete

1. Alexandros Karavitis Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Varies depending on the decision of the dean and donations
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • A third-year student from selected departments
    • Passed at least 2/3 of course units

Undergraduate students from the School of Philosophy, School of Social Sciences, and School of Education are eligible for the Alexandros Karavitis Scholarship available at the University of Crete. This grant is awarded to third-year students provided that they passed at least 2/3 of their course units and achieved the highest grade. Scholars are recognized following approval from the General Assembly of the Department. Should two students tie in for the offer, the scholarship is granted to the individual with the most courses.

2. Free Tuition

The University of Crete is a public institution and, as such, does not charge tuition or bench fees for its undergraduate students. This free tuition benefit also applies to around 40 master’s degree programs and all Ph.D. programs. This system allows many students to pursue education with less burden, especially on the financial aspect.

Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Crete

1. A.G. Leventis Foundation Educational Grant

The A.G. Leventis Foundation was established in 1979 to continue the legacy of Anastasios G. Leventis, who had spent his life dedicated to society, education, and culture. Over the years, he had supported many individuals from all walks of life – fellow citizens, students, refugees. Leventis initiated this scholarship made available at the University of Crete to help ease the burden on students.

Interested students may submit their application, including personal and academic information, personal statement, Ph.D. proposal, references, and other documents. They may also have to submit an acceptance letter. Accepted scholars will enjoy the benefits for one academic year, but the scholarship is renewable as well.

2. Christina Spyraki Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 600 euros
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Not a beneficiary of another scholarship
    • Neuroscience student
  • Degree Offered: Postgraduate

The Christina Spyraki Scholarship at the University of Crete was established and named after the late Professor Christina Spyraki last 2006. Scholars are outstanding neuroscience students who got the highest score during their first postgraduate year and met other academic requirements set by the University of Crete. The Research Committee shall award the scholarship to the selected student. The scholarship benefits are good for one year only.

3. Scholarships of the Research Committee

  • Eligibility Criteria: student of the School of Philosophy, School of Education, or School of Social Studies

The Research Committee of the University of Crete has been granting scholarships for postgraduate and Ph.D. students since 1999. Qualified students are on the second cycle of their studies (postgraduate) and the third cycle (Ph.D. students). The grants are awarded after a thorough selection of each department.

4. ADMI Sponsorships Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: varies every year
  • Eligibility Criteria: student of the Faculty of Sciences and Technological Sciences
  • Degree Offered: Master’s and PhD

The ADMI Sponsorship Scholarships at the University of Crete were established last 2020 and are funded by the Independent Electricity Transmission Manager SA. It is intended for postgraduate students from the Faculty of Sciences and Technological Sciences to help support their research focusing on the environment and energy. The scholarship benefit amount is defined by the dean every year and thus, may vary.
