The University of Bristol started its history as the University College, Bristol way back in 1876. It was through the efforts of John Percival who wanted to establish the institution that the university was birthed until it received its royal charter in 1909 and came to be known as the University of Bristol. 1. Think Big Scholarship

The Think Big Scholarship is offered to all international students enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or Master’s program at the University of Bristol. For undergraduates, enrollees taking up Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science are not eligible for the scholarship. On the other hand, all Master’s students under any faculty can apply.

2. Alumni Academic Achievement Award

    • First-year full/part-time students

From the donations of the university’s alumni, the Alumni Academic Achievement Award is given to outstanding first-year students from all faculties. There is no application process– all high-achieving first-years will automatically be considered. The faculty summer exam board determines the final list based on a merit-based selection mechanism. Chosen awardees for this University of Bristol scholarship will receive a one-time award of GBP 1,000.

3. The Beacon Scholarship

The Beacon Scholarship aims to support financially disadvantaged undergraduate students from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Applicants are chosen by nomination from their current school head. Once they have received confirmation of their acceptance to the Beacon partner university, the student can proceed in applying for this University of Bristol scholarship.

The Beacon Equity Trust makes the final selection of scholars on the basis of academic ability, financial need, and leadership potential. Funded by the Beacon Equity Trust and the University of Bristol, the scholarship covers two-thirds of the combined amount of the tuition fee, living costs, and one return economy airfare.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Bristol

1. Faculty of Arts: Conference Funding for Postgraduate Researchers

  • Eligibility Criteria: Postgraduate research students under the Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Bristol has available funding for their postgraduate researchers who need to attend conferences or research trips. Applications are received throughout the year and are assessed by the Faculty towards the end of each month. Selected grantees will receive GBP 250, which can cover transportation costs, accommodation, or registration fees. Full-time students can apply for funding twice per academic year, while part-time students can apply once. Priority is given to those who are applying for the first time.

2. Michael Wong Pakshong Bursary

  • Eligibility Criteria: International students enrolled under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law

The Michael Wong Pakshong Bursary was established by the family of late Dr. Michael Wong Pagshong who was a student at the university in 1954. The family wanted to honor his desire of supporting students in Bristol, a city that he loved and thanked for paving the way for his success.

Each year, two scholarship rounds are opened, wherein one candidate per round will be chosen to receive the bursary amounting to GBP 3,000. Interested applicants must be full-time overseas students enrolled under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Applicants for this University of Bristol scholarship will also be automatically considered for the Think Big Postgraduate Scholarship– there is no need to apply for this scholarship separately.

3. Marshall Partnership Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • US citizens who hold a diploma from a university in the United States
    • Obtained a grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 during their undergraduate studies
    • Does not hold any other degrees from a school in the UK

The Marshall Partner Scholarship dates back to as early as the 1950s when the United Kingdom wanted to strengthen its relations with its wartime ally, the United States. With this, the scholarship was established as a gift to support American students with their studies. The Marshall Partner Scholarship helps students from the US pursue their postgraduate studies at a partner university in the UK.

To apply for this scholarship at the University of Bristol, students must send their application, which will be reviewed by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. Once approved, the commission will forward potential candidates to the partner institution, and the university will make the final decision on the student’s admission acceptance. Assessment of applications is based on the student’s academic standing, leadership potential, and ambassadorial potential. Chosen awardees will receive the scholarship for up to two years, with a possible one-year extension for doctoral studies. The scholarship covers university fees, costs of living, grants, and airfare expenses to and from the United States.
