The Philipps-Universität Marburg, also known as the University of Marburg, is the oldest university in Hessen, Germany. It is the oldest Protestant institution in the world but currently does not hold any religious affiliations anymore. UMR was founded in 1527 and is comprised of 16 departments and 14 academic centers for research. They are best known for offering almost all scientific disciplines and having one of the best medical faculties in Germany. The University of Marburg is home to over 23,000 students, 14.5% of which are foreign enrollees. Aside from its academic excellence, the UMR experience includes living in a medieval and historical city. Many opportunities for leisure await in and out of campus.

In this article, we will be discussing some of the University of Marburg scholarships for international students wanting to pursue their studies in the institution. The University of Marburg does not offer any financial aid however, many private foundations and government programs are available for those who are keen to study in a German university.

University of Marburg Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of Marburg

1. Federal Ministry of Education and Research: Deutschlandstipendium

The Deutschlandstipendium is a scholarship program equally funded by the Federal Government and private sponsors. It is open to all international Bachelor’s and Master’s students who are keen to pursue their studies in a partner German university. The scholarship is mostly merit-based and favors candidates with outstanding academic records, personal achievements, and those who show social commitment.

Before applying for this scholarship available at the University of Marburg, the candidate must have already been accepted into a German institution. The awardees will receive EUR 300 each month for at least two semesters. Extension of the scholarship until the completion of the study period is possible if the student still meets the criteria and upon the availability of funds.

2. Evangelisches Studienwerk: Scholarship for Students With Refugee Status

The Evangelisches Studienwerk is an organization that focuses on helping outstanding students in Protestant churches in Germany. However, their scholarship for refugees is open to all students, regardless of their religious beliefs. To qualify, applicants must be enrolled full-time in their third semester or below in a German institution. A German language proficiency level of C1 is also required.

Applications for the scholarship are received until the 1st of March and September annually. The scholarship covers the entire duration of studies of its recipients. Scholars can receive up to EUR 752 monthly plus an additional allowance of EUR 300 for their daily living expenses. Aside from this, the grantees will also be offered individual mentoring and other non-material support for their studies.

3. Friedrich Ebert Foundation: Scholarship for International Students

    • Foreign students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe

The institution seeks to encourage political conversations about current global challenges and to promote social democracy worldwide. One of the ways in which FES takes action is by providing scholarship opportunities to outstanding students who show great potential in contributing to change.

This scholarship available at the University of Marburg for international students is open to all candidates from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Each year, up to 40 scholarships are awarded to students who want to take a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a state or state-recognized university in Germany. The funding period varies, but chosen Bachelor’s scholars will receive EUR 830 monthly, while Master’s scholars will receive EUR 850. Health insurance costs are also covered and those with children will receive an additional family allowance amounting to EUR 276.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Marburg

1. Friedrich Naumann Foundation: Scholarship for International Students

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation, founded in 1958, is a German organization that aims to promote liberalism and political awareness. They offer postgraduate scholarship programs to German, EU, and other foreign students from all over the world. One of their programs focuses on providing funding for international Master’s students. Candidates who wish to apply for this University of Marburg scholarship can attend their studies in any state or state-recognized institution in Germany. They may also pursue any field of study.

Applications are received online until April and October of each year. If accepted, the scholar will receive EUR 861 every month for a total of two semesters. A contribution to their health insurance will also be made. Additionally, the scholarship includes non-monetary support such as opportunities to attend events and join in the foundation’s projects. Applications can be sent only once the student has been nominated by their chosen graduate school. If accepted, the scholarship can fund the awardees’ studies for up to four years. GSSP provides a monthly payment of EUR 1,200, health and insurance coverage, travel allowance, and an annual research allowance of EUR 460.

3. German Academic Scholarship Foundation: Doctoral Scholarships

The German Academic Scholarship Foundation supports doctoral students who show outstanding academic performance and commitment towards social causes. All applications will go through a preliminary review, then shortlisted candidates will undergo an interview before the final selection is made.

Chosen scholars of this University of Marburg scholarship will receive the award for a minimum of two years– renewal can be requested twice for six months each.
