The University of Malaya, otherwise known as UM, is a public research university that can be found in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is the oldest and highest-ranking university in the country, which adds more to its prestige. In fact, it is also consistently ranked 65th in the world and among the top 3 universities in Southeast Asia. Because of this, it’s no surprise that there are many students that dream of continuing their studies there. Here, we will be looking at the University of Malaya scholarships for international students.

It currently has its academics divided into 13 faculties and 5 institutes. For international students, the university is also partnered with many overseas institutions and is welcoming to foreign students. In fact, almost half of their student population are international students! This wonderful university definitely combines prestige with diversity among its students.

Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Malaya

1. Malaysia International Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to citizens of ASEAN countries, Morocco, and Palestine only. If aiming for a Master’s degree, the applicant must not be over 40 years of age. For Doctorate students, they must not be over 45 years of age. The applicant must possess a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 from their previous course of study. The applicant will also be required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language. Lastly, the applicant must also submit their research proposal.

This University of Malaya scholarship is only applicable in selected areas of study. Priority will be given to applicants that choose a course within those areas.

Applicants will also be required to secure two recommendation letters from referees. Any official document coming from the applicant’s previous educational institute must be certified before submission.

All applications must be submitted on or before April 15th. Applications must be completed online. It is important that the applicant submit the completed application form along with all the required documents. Incomplete or late applications will not be entertained.

2. The Universiti Malaya Excellence Ph.D. Scholarship – Full

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees and a monthly allowance
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals that are below 35 years of age. The applicant must be applying for a full-time course and are not yet registered as a Ph.D. student with the University of Malaya. The applicant must have also graduated with a Master’s degree with distinction and a CGPA of at least 3.7. Lastly, the applicant must meet the English language proficiency requirements.

This scholarship available at the University of Malaya will be granted for 6 semesters, or until the student completes their Doctoral program. The English language proficiency test submitted will only be considered valid if it is within two years from the date the applicant took the test.

This scholarship may not be granted alongside other sponsorships or forms of financial aid. The awarded applicants must also publish 3 papers before graduation. A monthly allowance of RM 2,500 will also be granted to the scholarship awardees.

All applications must be completed online. The application period will open from September 1st until October 29th. Applications must be submitted with the complete supporting documents. Failure to do so will result in the dismissal of your application.

3. The Universiti Malaya Excellence Ph.D. Scholarship – Partial

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: All nationals under the age of 35 are eligible. The candidate must be enrolling for a full-time course and not yet registered at the University of Malaya as a Ph.D. student. In addition, the candidate must have earned a Master’s degree with honors and a CGPA of at least 3.7, along with a Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5. Last but not least, the applicant must have a strong command of the English language.

This scholarship will last for six semesters or until the student’s graduation. The English language competency exam that the candidate submits will only be considered legitimate if it was taken within the last two years of the examination date.

This scholarship may be awarded alongside other sponsorships. The awardee will also be expected to publish 2 papers before their 7th semester. The awarding of this University of Malaya scholarship will ultimately depend on the student’s performance. Students with higher credentials may be awarded the Full scholarship instead.

All applications must be submitted via the online application portal. From September 1st through October 29th, applications will be accepted. Applications must be accompanied by the required supporting documentation. Incomplete application submissions will be ignored.

4. Universiti Malaya Financial Aid

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to 100% of tuition fees and a monthly allowance
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. The applicant must have received an offer of admission and an offer for a position as a Graduate Research Assistant for a period of at least 4 months at the university. They must also be free of any outstanding debt to the university and must be within the Graduate on Time (GOT) candidature at the time of application.

The amount granted will ultimately depend on the Research Grant the students will receive. Awarded applicants will also receive a living allowance along with the tuition fee waiver. There are some fees, such as the International Student fee, which are not covered by the scholarship.

Applications must be submitted online through the online application portal. The university will not accept hard copy applications. Applicants must also submit their Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) offer letter along with their application form.

All applications for this University of Malaya scholarship must be submitted during the application period from March 8th until August 21st.
