The University of Hamburg, otherwise known as Universität Hamburg, is the largest educational institute in northern Germany and one of the largest in the entire country. The University of Hamburg has been consistently ranked among the world’s top 200 universities. It is found in the beautiful city of Hamburg, Germany, and was founded back in the 1900s. Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Hamburg

1. Merit Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: €850
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals that do not hold a German citizenship. To be considered an eligible applicant, the applicant must have already been enrolled at the University of Hamburg for at least two semesters. They must also be able to provide proof of excellent academic performance from their previous semesters.

The application process will be accomplished online. There are two application periods, one in spring and fall. All applications must be submitted before April 15th or October 15th. The university recommends that students schedule an individual advising session with their counselors before application.

This University of Hamburg scholarship is only valid for one year, but students are welcome to reapply the following year. The student is allowed to reapply a maximum of 3 times.

Part of the documents required for application are two evaluation letters from professors teaching at the University of Hamburg.

2. Germany Scholarship at University of Hamburg

  • Scholarship Amount: €300 paid monthly
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. Eligible applicants must already be enrolled in an undergraduate study at the University of Hamburg, have shown a good work ethic and academic performance, are involved with volunteer work, and must be able to provide proof of need.

The scholarship grant will be awarded on a monthly basis for one year. The scholarship can also be awarded simultaneously with other non-merit or non-achievement scholarships. It will be awarded on a need-based measure. Part-time students are also allowed to apply.

Applicants are always welcome no matter the semester, course, nationality, or age of the student. This is an attempt by the German government and private sponsors to support students to be able to study stress-free.

3. Degree Completion Grants for International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to €720
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals, excluding German citizens. Only students that are currently enrolled and pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Hamburg will be considered eligible. The student must be entering the final phase of their studies and are about to graduate. Applicants will also be required to provide proof of financial need.

The monthly amount granted will vary depending on the student’s income. These university of Hamburg scholarships will be paid out every month for six months. If the student is unable to complete their final examination within six months, they are permitted to request for an extension. They can request for an extension of up to a maximum of 12 months.

The application process will be completed online. There are two application periods, and all applications must be submitted before June 1st and December 1st.

During the application process, the student must provide a valid reason for application, a schedule detailing all the steps left before their final examination, and an evaluation from a supervisor on the student’s final thesis.

Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Hamburg

1. Doctoral Scholarships at University of Hamburg

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to €1,200
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. To be considered an eligible applicant, the applicant must be a student of the University of Hamburg and must have already completed their master’s degree with remarkable academic achievements.

Applicants must apply for this scholarship immediately after their master’s degree graduation. Applicants who apply and have not yet completed their master’s degree will not be considered. In special cases, they will consider applicants who have worked for a maximum of three years, as long as they can provide proof of issues that prevented the student from continuing their studies sooner.

This is a competitive scholarship at the University of Hamburg, with only 15 scholarships awarded every year. All applications shall be completed online and submitted via email to the university. There are two application periods, in April or October. Late applications will not be considered.

2. Merit Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to €1,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals that do not hold a German citizenship. To be considered an eligible applicant, the applicant must have already been enrolled at the University of Hamburg for at least one semester. They must also be able to provide proof of excellent academic performance or other academic achievements.
  • Degree Offered: Master’s and Doctoral

This is not only a merit-based scholarship but also a need-based one. Applicants that can provide evidence of financial need will have a better chance of being selected. There is also no age limit for this scholarship.

The funding of this University of Hamburg scholarship will only be awarded for a year, but students are allowed to re-apply for the scholarship for a maximum of three years.
