University of Eastern Finland Scholarships for International Students

The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) was formed by merging two universities in 2010 – the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio. Now, UEF is comprised of 4 faculties and welcomes thousands of international students to their two campuses. Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Eastern Finland

1. Tuition Fees Waivers

  • Scholarship Amount: 50% – 70% of annual tuition fee
  • Eligibility Criteria: non-European citizens

The University of Eastern Finland grants tuition fee scholarships for international degree programs or master’s degree programs. These are partial tuition waivers of up to 70%, depending on the specific program. For those applying for the waiver during their second year, it is only available if you have completed at least 55 ECTS of studies in your degree. You may apply through the Studyinfo application form.

2. Early Bird Tuition Fee Deduction

The Early Bird Tuition Fee Deduction is granted to students who have paid their tuition fees and accepted their study place within a certain period. This deduction does not apply to those pursuing Erasmus Mundus programs or joint degree programs.

The university’s tuition fees cover the personal study plan or degree, studies-related supervision and counseling, and other supporting services.

3. Free Tuition

  • Eligibility Criteria: EU/EEA/Swiss citizen or meet other conditions

Some international students are exempted from tuition fees if they meet one of these specific conditions: an EU/EEA or equivalent citizen; resident of Finland or other EU countries permanently; have an EU blue card; Doctoral/Ph.D. level student and researcher; or exchange student. However, to be granted the exemption, you will have to submit at least one of the documents specified by the university (see scholarship link). Also, programs taught in Finnish will be free of charge, regardless of citizenship.

Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Eastern Finland

1. Finland Scholarship (Suomi-stipendi)

  • Scholarship Amount: 13,000 – 15,000 euros
  • Eligibility Criteria: first-year non-EU/EEA citizens

The Finland Scholarship (Suomi-stipendi) is supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. It is granted to the two top master’s degree applicants for the offer. It is awarded for the first year of their studies, and the total value depends on the scholar’s tuition fee. The scholarship benefits include a 10% tuition waiver (up to 10,000 euros) for the first-year tuition fee and a 5,000 euros relocation grant. The benefits for this scholarship available at the University of Eastern Finland are granted in one installment only, and the scholar must have a Finnish bank account.

The scholarship duration is for the first year only. In the following year, students may avail themselves of tuition fee waivers for their studies. To apply, you may do so using the Studyinfo application form. You may apply for a tuition waiver and the Finland scholarship at the same time.

2. EMJMD Scholarships (Partner Countries) – Master of Science in European Forestry

  • Scholarship Amount: 8,500 euros for participation costs; up to 4,000 euros for travel and installation costs; 1,000 euros per month for subsistence costs
  • Eligibility Criteria: citizen of Erasmus+ Partner Country

One of the double-degrees offered by the Erasmus+: Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Programme (EMJMD) is the Master of Science in European Forestry (MSc EF). This program is delivered through a consortium of six universities, with the University of Finland acting as coordinator. Interested students with related bachelor’s degrees or equivalent degrees may apply for the program.

Students who are citizens from an Erasmus+ Partner Country and have not conducted any main activity (i.e., studies, training, or work) in a Programme Country for more than 12 months over the last five years are eligible for this offer. For students with the same citizenship, only three will be awarded the scholarship. Applying for admission to the program also serves as your application for the scholarship – the best applicants will be granted the offer. You will need to submit certain documents (e.g., original degree certificate; transcripts; curriculum vitae) and meet language requirements. 3. EMJMD Scholarships (Programme Countries) – Master of Science in European Forestry

  • Scholarship Amount: 4,250 euros for participation costs; up to 1,000 euros for travel and installation costs; 1,000 euros per month for subsistence costs

Students from the European Union, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey are considered Programme Country students under the Erasmus+ program. Also, students who do not meet the condition for Partner Countries will be regarded as a Program Country student (i.e., had main activity in a Programme Country for more than 12 months within five years). If you are one of them, your application for the MSc EF program will be automatically assessed for the EMJMD scholarship.

For those with dual citizenship, you must specify under which nationality you are submitting your application for this University of Eastern Finland scholarship. The maximum value of the scholarship is 39,500 euros and has a duration of 2 years. Only three students per nationality will be awarded the offer.
