University of Cologne Scholarships for International Students

The University of Cologne, or locally known as the Universitat zu Koln, is a public university located in Cologne, Germany. It is currently one of the oldest and largest universities not just in Germany, but in all of Europe. It is also ranked among the world’s top 300 universities. The university features 6 faculties with more than 100 programs offered. Staying true to its title as one of Germany’s most prominent universities, the university houses more than 48,000 students, with over 6,000 of them being international students. University of Cologne Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Cologne

1. Germany Scholarship – University of Cologne

  • Scholarship Amount: €300 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. Only students that showcase above-average academic talent and have already accepted an offer of admission into the University of Cologne will be considered eligible.

Applicants will be required to submit school records that show they are of high academic capacity, provide proof of extracurricular involvements, and a letter of motivation on why they feel they should be awarded this scholarship.

This scholarship available at the University of Cologne will be granted for two semesters. Students will be given the possibility of an extension if they are able to maintain excellent academic performance.

Applications for this scholarship must be completed online through the Germany Scholarship Application Server. The application period will open from August 16th till September 13th. Late applications will not be considered.

2. University of Cologne Social Grant

  • Scholarship Amount: €300 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. To be considered eligible, the applicant must be an academically high-performing individual and is able to provide proof of financial need. Eligible applicants also must have already received a letter of admission to study at the University of Cologne.

Preference will be given to students entering their first year or second semester of their first year. It is still possible for students of a higher year to apply. Still, they will be required to submit additional documents showcasing the academic achievements they have achieved during their study at the university.

This University of Cologne scholarship may also be granted alongside other scholarships.

3. Germany Scholarship for Top Athletes – University of Cologne

  • Scholarship Amount: €300 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all competitive athletes. Interested applicants must have already received admission into the University of Cologne and can provide a training certificate, proof of sporting success, and good academic records to be considered eligible.

This scholarship is a branch of the Germany Scholarship that is aimed at capable athletes.

This is a limited scholarship that will be awarded to the highest-performing individuals both in academics and sports. Only 20 scholarships are awarded each year. Scholarship applications must be submitted online and before the deadline of September 13th.

The University of Cologne also does not require a tuition fee, but students will be expected to pay €250 per semester as a social contribution fee. These are only some of the scholarships and grants offered by the University of Cologne. However, there are many scholarships and grants that are funded by private individuals. Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Cologne

1. Germany Study Scholarship – Master Studies

  • Scholarship Amount: €861 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals listed on the eligible country list found in the scholarship link. Applicants must have already received and accepted an offer of admission from the University of Cologne and have already completed their Bachelor’s by the time they apply. Only academically qualified students of an Arts or Architecture degree are eligible to apply.

Additionally, interested applicants will be required to submit a letter of motivation explaining why they believe they should be awarded this scholarship as well as why they chose to pursue their degree in Germany.

The funding of this scholarship at the University of Cologne will span between 10 to 24 months, depending on the length of the student’s course of study. This scholarship will also cover the student’s health insurance, a travel allowance, study allowance, German language courses, and possibly, the student’s living fees.

2. German Studies Research Grant

  • Scholarship Amount: $2,000 up to $3,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to North American and Canadian citizens only. Applicants must be able to provide proof of great academic achievements during their previous course of study. They must have already accepted an offer of admission into the University of Cologne. Applicants must also be conducting their research on German Cultural Studies in order to be considered eligible.

The scholarship amount will depend on the student’s duration of stay but will only be granted for 1 to 2 months. This scholarship will also cover the student’s travel and living expenses.

This scholarship is given out with the intent to encourage students to study and research subjects related to German culture while allowing them to conduct their research in Germany.

3. Research Grants – Doctoral Programs in Germany

  • Scholarship Amount: €1,200 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals listed on the eligible country list found in the scholarship link. Qualified applicants must be able to provide records showcasing outstanding academic achievements and a well-planned research project. The student must already be enrolled in a Doctoral program at the University of Cologne.

This scholarship may be granted for up to a maximum of 4 years. Awarded applicants will initially be awarded for 1 year, but this may be extended if the student showcases great academic achievements during the granted year.

This University of Cologne scholarship will also cover the student’s medical insurance, living costs, travel fees, research allowance, and German Language Courses.
