University of Auckland Scholarships for International Students

The University of Auckland is a public research university found in 1883 and based in Auckland, New Zealand. It is the largest and highest-ranked university in New Zealand and is regularly placed among the Top 100 universities in the world. As of 2020, it hosts around 40,000 students across five campuses and eight faculties in Auckland. It offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in the fields of Science and Engineering, Medicine, Law, Business, Arts, and Social studies.

Every year, the University of Auckland awards over $50 million in scholarships and prizes and provides a range of general international and country-specific scholarships. Students at the University of Auckland can simultaneously hold more than one scholarship or award at a time, although some exceptions apply.

Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Auckland

1. University of Auckland International School Leaver Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $20,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: international secondary school students, enrolling in a first-year undergraduate program at the University of Auckland; academic merit and personal statement quality

International School Leaver Scholarship is eligible for international students who have previously attended secondary school in New Zealand. They annually offer 10 scholarships up to $20,000 for one year. The applications open on the 5th of December and close on the 18th of January in the award year. The Selection Committee assesses the students according to their academic merit and student’s personal statement.

Academic merit is determined by an Admissions Grade Point Equivalent (GPE). More on GPE calculations and equivalents can be found in the scholarship’s pamphlet. If a student is already awarded the University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship or a University of Auckland Vietnam Excellence Scholarship they can not apply for this scholarship at the University of Auckland. However, if a student is already awarded any other scholarship that was approved by the University of Auckland Council, they are eligible to apply for this scholarship as well.

2. University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $10,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: full-fee paying undergraduate or postgraduate international students; GPE of at least 6.0

International Student Excellence Scholarship is awarded to the first-rate international students with first enrollment to the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Auckland. Students who have already begun their studies at the university are no longer eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The university awards up to 50 International Student Excellence Scholarships per year in the amount of up to $10,000 per student. The applications for this University of Auckland scholarship open on October 10 (1st semester) / March 9 (2nd semester) and close on November 21(1st semester) / April 20 (2nd semester) in the year of the award. The Selection Committee assesses the students according to their academic merit that is determined by a GPE of at least 6.0. More on the scholarship’s selection process can be found here.

3. ESET Chillisoft Scholarship in Cybersecurity

  • Scholarship Amount: $5,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: enrollment in the Faculty of Science program related to Cybersecurity; GPE of at least 7.0

ESET Chillisoft Scholarship in Cybersecurity is a scholarship funded by a security software distributor Chillisoft and it was established to promote Cybersecurity studies at the University of Auckland. The application is opened to all students, international and domestic, on an either undergraduate or postgraduate level as long as they are attending a Cybersecurity-related program at the Faculty of Science.

The applications are opened from July 20 until August 31. The students are assessed according to their academic merit, and they have to hold a GPA of at least 7.0 (or at least 6.50 for Māori and Pacific students) to be eligible for applying. Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Auckland

1. Beatrice Ratcliffe Postgraduate Scholarship in Music

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $10,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: enrollment in postgraduate Music studies; GPE of at least 6.5
  • Scholarship Link

Beatrice Ratcliffe Postgraduate Scholarship in Music was established in 2016 to support postgraduate students at the School of Music. Eligible candidates for this University of Auckland scholarship must be enrolled in either master’s or doctoral program at the university. Academic merit is assessed by the Selection Committee and determined by the GPE, which has to be of at least 6.5.

A student’s financial position can also play a role in identifying the right candidates for the scholarship. The students can apply for the scholarship from January 4 until February 15. More on the scholarship and the selection process can be found here.

2. Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries for Best Doctoral Thesis

  • Scholarship Amount: it varies on student’s tuition fee and health insurance amount
  • Eligibility Criteria: PhD students
  • Scholarship Link

Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries offers a scholarship to PhD students at the University of Auckland. The award covers $500 annually.

This scholarship aims to recognize outstanding research students at the university. There is no separate application needed for eligible candidates who will be nominated by the relevant faculty and committee. All doctoral students with research thesis are considered for this.

3. University of Auckland International Business Masters Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $32,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: international students enrolled in a University of Auckland Business School program; GPA of at least 6.0
  • Scholarship Link

International Business Masters Scholarship is available for new international students of the University’s Business School Programs and covers tuition fees for the entire duration of the program. Students are awarded the scholarship according to their academic success, with a GPA not lower than 6.0. Students without any financial support have a preference during the selection process.

Applications for the International Business Masters Scholarship are opened from December 4 until January 18 for the April admissions and from April 20 until June 1 for the September admissions.
