University of Alberta Scholarships for International Students

The University of Alberta is a large, research-intensive institution founded in 1908 and based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The university offers a range of undergraduate programs as well as master’s and doctoral programs.

Also known as U of A or UAlberta, the university awards $34 million each year in undergraduate scholarships and financial support to international students, Canadian citizens, and permanent residents of Canada who wish to study there.

For a student to be eligible for a scholarship at the University of Alberta, they must first meet Admission and Competitive Requirements.

University of Alberta Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Alberta

1. International Admission Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $5,000 CAD, depending on admission average
  • Eligibility Criteria: high admission and competitive requirements, high school admission average

The University of Alberta offers a range of scholarships, some of which do not require an application. Students are automatically evaluated for the scholarship when they apply for admission at the university. Eligibility is based on students’ high school admission average at the time of their admission offer. The scholarship is given to top students (percentage varies from year to year).

2. Gold Standard Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $6,000, depending on admission average
  • Eligibility Criteria: high admission and competitive requirements, high school admission average (top 5 %)

Similar to the previous scholarship, the Gold Standard Scholarship is given to students based on their high school admission average. This University of Alberta scholarship is given to the top 5 % of students admitted to each faculty. No application is required.

3. President’s International Distinction Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $120,000 CAD (payable over 4 years)
  • Eligibility Criteria: superior admission and competitive average, demonstrated leadership qualities within the first year of an undergraduate degree on a Student Visa Permit

Students with very high admission and competitive average can apply for President’s International Distinction Scholarship. The students are required to provide the university with a contact information reference and an activity summary. The references are not required to submit a reference letter but will be contacted by the university if needed. To complete the application, the students also have to respond to a variety of questions, including four long questions with answers up to 250 words and a couple of yes/no questions. Postgraduate Scholarships at University of Alberta

1. University of Alberta Graduate Recruitment Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: number of increments of $5,000 (according to department’s decision)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • student with a study permit/Canadian citizen/permanent resident
    • student admitted to a doctoral or thesis-based master’s graduate degree program
    • full-time registration to the selected program
    • admission GPA of at least 3.5
  • Degree Offered: Master’s or PhD

Graduate Recruitment Scholarship is open to international and domestic students with either course-based or thesis-based programs. There is no application procedure. Each graduate department selects nominees based on a variety of criteria including the applicant’s research and academic record, letters of appraisal, contributions to research, etc.

2. University of Alberta Graduate Entrance Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $17,500 (Master’s); $21,000 (Doctoral)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • newly admitted student in one of the terms in a master’s or doctoral program
    • GPA of 3.7 or higher
    • full-time registration during the tenure of the award
  • Degree Offered: Master’s or PhD

Graduate Entrance Scholarship is open to international and domestic students with either course-based or thesis-based programs. There is no application procedure. The students are considered on the recommendation of their admitting department. This scholarship is eligible for students that rank highly in their department at admission.

3. Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $12,000 one-time payment
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • course-based or thesis-based study programs
    • masters or doctoral students
    • full-time registration during the tenure of the award
    • good academic record
    • must be living in Alberta while enrolled in the institution
  • Degree Offered: Master’s or PhD

Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship is open for master’s and doctoral students with good academic standing who are in the final stages of their studies. As is customary for the University of Alberta, this is a nomination-only scholarship. There is no application form. The students are considered on the recommendation of their admitting department.
