Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, otherwise known as UNIST, is a public research university in Ulsan, South Korea. It is one of the four public universities in South Korea that is centered around science and technology. It is a prestigious university that is ranked among South Korea’s top ten universities.

The university is in a prime location, with most industry giants surrounding it. Huge companies like Hyundai Motors, SK Energy, and Hyundai Heavy Industries. Ulsan is also South Korea’s largest industrial city. It provides a great hands-on experience for the students, especially with their ‘flipped learning’ approach to studies. For students with an interest in research, UNIST boasts state-of-the-art facilities and labs that feature world-renowned scientists. Even though the university is still relatively young, only being founded in 2009, it is still a top and prestigious university in South Korea. It is an excellent choice for international students because even though UNIST is a public university funded by the South Korean government, all of its courses are taught entirely in English. It is also the only institution in South Korea to have this feat. Because of this, the university is actively seeking out more international applicants into the university.

Undergraduate Scholarships at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

1. Global UNISTAR Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 500,000 to 800,000 KRW
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all Nationals. Eligible applicants must have received and accepted an offer of admission from the Institute, showcase excellent academic records, and be recommended by the UNIST Admission Committee.

This UNIST scholarship has no application period. Eligible applicants will be informed immediately upon admission into UNIST. There will be two admission periods, in spring and fall. The granted scholarship amount will depend on the student’s academic performance.

International students are automatically eligible to receive the UNISTAR scholarship for the first semester. Students awarded the scholarship must maintain the GPA requirement in order to stay eligible for the scholarship. Student meal plans are also included with this award.

2. UNIST Global Dream Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 130,000 to 300,000 KRW
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all Nationals. Eligible applicants must have accepted the admission offer from the Institute and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 during the course of their studies.

This scholarship does not require a separate application form. Eligible applicants for this UNIST scholarship will automatically be assessed during the enrollment process. This scholarship will not be granted to students that are awarded the UNISTAR Scholarship.

During the first semester of study, there will be no minimum GPA requirement. From the second semester onwards, the awarded applicants must meet the GPA requirement and maintain it in order to stay eligible for the scholarship. Granted scholarships vary depending on the student’s maintained GPA. The scholarship includes the student’s meal plans during the course of their studies.

3. Academic Performance Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 50% or 100% Tuition Fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all Nationals. Eligible applicants must have already received and accepted an offer of admission from the Institute. They must also be able to provide proof of good academic performance.

This scholarship also does not require a separate application. There will be no application period. Instead, there are two admission periods to take note of, in spring and fall. Applicants will automatically be assessed, and the scholarship will be awarded immediately upon enrollment.

Additionally, tuition for the first semester will be waived in full. From then on, the student must maintain a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 in order to be eligible for a scholarship grant of half the tuition fees. Students that are able to maintain an even higher GPA of 3.1 will receive a full tuition fee grant.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

1. UNIST Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: The awarded amount depends on the degree of study pursued. 9,600,000 KRW for Masters and 13,200,000 KRW for Doctoral.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all Nationals. Eligible applicants must meet the admission requirements of their chosen course of study and be able to provide proof of English proficiency for students not from countries where English is the first language.

There is no application for this UNIST scholarship. All applicants that receive admission into the UNIST Graduate School will be considered for this scholarship. Applicants applying for a Doctoral degree require a referral from a supervisor.

Additionally, international students do not need to pay for admission fees into UNIST Graduate School.

A dormitory on campus will be available for graduate students.

2. Korean Government Scholarship/ Global Korea Scholarship – Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology Graduate School

  • Scholarship Amount: Full Tuition Fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all Non-Korean Nationals. Eligible applicants must receive and accept an admission offer into the Graduate School, exhibit outstanding academic performance and potential, and be under 40 years of age.

Applications for this scholarship will be submitted to either the Korean Embassy at the student’s country of origin or directly to the Institute. The application deadline varies every year, applicants must reach out to the Korean embassy or the Institute to confirm the application deadline. Because of the volume of applicants every year, there will be two selection processes. Shortlisted applicants will have to undergo an interview before being awarded this scholarship available at UNIST.

The scholarship benefits include full payment for the student’s airfare, a living allowance, medical insurance, a completion grant, Korean language courses fees if needed, and an additional allowance for students that showcase excellent Korean Language proficiency.
