The University of California, Los Angeles, or UCLA is one of the University of California system campuses in the United States. It was established in 1882, and it has twelve professional schools with over 125 degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. It is considered as one of the country’s Public Ivies, consistently ranked among the best universities in the world. In addition, its School of the Arts and Architecture is considered the number 1 art school in the country.

UCLA has been recognized to have an economic impact on the state of California. In 2018, it was reported that the university was able to produce start-ups and businesses that have garnered over $11 billion. In addition, it is one of the members of the Association of American Universities and engages in high research activities in interdisciplinary studies, including digital humanities, environmental science, sustainability studies, data science, among others.

As a thriving university, UCLA ensures that its students are given opportunities to develop academically and professionally, offering them internships, fellowships, and research activities inside and outside the country. It also has traditions and celebrations that students can enjoy throughout their stay. UCLA Scholarships

UCLA does not award scholarships or financial aid to undergraduate students who are not residing in the United States. Therefore, in order to study at the university, interested international undergraduate students must present that they have enough funds to cover their educational and living expenses, which includes tuition fees and additional student fees. However, there are several funding opportunities available for both US residents and international students for graduate students. Below are some of them.

1. Dickson Fellowships

  • Scholarship Amount: $22,000, tuition and fees

Some scholarships at UCLA can be in the form of fellowships. UCLA Department of Art History has several fellowships for graduate students, including the Dickson Fellowships. It is funded by the widow of the University of California’s Regent, Edward A. Dickinson. Interested applicants must study in UCLA’s Department of Art History or program and must demonstrate high academic credentials. In addition, they must submit their statement of work along with their curriculum vitae. If selected, they will receive a stipend of up to $22,000 and tuition and fees remission.

2. Mahindra Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Scholarship Amount: $69,000 and health insurance coverage

Ph.D. students at UCLA may apply for the fellowships from the Mahindra Humanities Center. It is a one-year postdoctoral fellowship focusing on topics of migration and humanities, including discussions about the historical and political challenges and transformation present in the 21st-century. In addition, interested applicants must present their Ph.D. degrees to qualify. And for those without degrees yet, they must demonstrate that they will receive the Ph.D. in the following year. If selected, students will receive health insurance, stipends of $65,000, moving assistance of $1,500, and research support of $2,500, with a total of $69,000.

3. Philanthropic and Educational Organization International Peace Scholarship Program

  • Scholarship Amount: $12,500

Students can apply to the Philanthropic and Educational Organization (PEO) International Peace Scholarship program. It is a one-year scholarship program at UCLA and is dedicated to incoming graduate students applying in the United States. To qualify, students must be studying full-time, must be women, and must be international students. In addition, they must have strong academic credentials and engagement in extracurricular activities in the university. The scholarship aims to push students to pursue new knowledge, make discoveries, and contribute to the university’s diverse and inclusive community. If selected, they will become PEO scholars and will receive a stipend of $12,500 as part of the aid package.

4. Research and Teaching Assistantships

  • Scholarship Amount: Tuition, student fees, and a living stipend

At UCLA, scholarships may also be in the form of research and teaching assistantships that are good funding opportunities for Master’s and Ph.D. students. Students will be given opportunities to build up their portfolios and resumes, develop new skills, and make connections. In addition, teaching assistantships allow students to have teaching experience, which means that they are required to perform tasks such as preparing course materials, grading papers, and assisting faculty members in their daily instructions. Research assistantships, on the other hand, are offered to scholars at UCLA, and students are required to perform research-related duties, such as conducting laboratory reports, having consultations, and more. These are all done under the supervision and guidance of a faculty member. Moreover, TAs and RAs will receive a financial aid package that includes fee remissions, health insurance, 100% tuition coverage, and 100% student services fee.

UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering offers teaching and research assistantships to graduate students. Interested students must meet the university’s criteria including the required enrolled academic units to qualify. There are also seminars they must attend for better preparation in college-level teaching and for professional development as well. In addition, eligible graduate students who serve as teaching assistants, graduate student researchers, tutors, and readers are eligible to receive paid health insurance coverage, 100% student services, and tuition fees.
