Financial aid programs at Tufts University are competitive, limited, and need-based. This means that students who wish to apply for financial assistance should present their demonstrated financial need, which is the difference between the annual cost to attend Tufts and the number of the students’ families’ salaries. With this, upon applying for financial assistance, students are evaluated through their financial resources. There are no merit-based scholarships available for international students, but Tufts University aims to meet all of the students’ financial needs.

1. Davis United World Scholars Program

Tufts University offers this scholarship to incoming first-year undergraduate students who graduated from United World College Schools (UWC). It is a need-based scholarship where scholars will receive a grant of $10,000 per year, renewable throughout their undergraduate degrees. They must maintain good academic credentials for it to be renewable. United World College Schools are situated across the globe, meaning, international students can apply for this scholarship program.

2. School of Engineering Graduate Scholarships

The university’s School of Engineering offers various scholarships to graduate students, for both U.S. residents and international students alike. These scholarship programs at Tufts University are merit-based, and interested applicants must also state their financial needs. For example, the Double Jumbo Alumni Scholarship is offered to alumni who have earned their degrees from Tufts University and are enrolling in the School of Engineering. The scholarship contains a financial aid package of 20% tuition reduction. Students who started their studies in the Fall of 2020 are eligible.

3. Graduate Fellowships

Another scholarship at Tufts University is fellowships that subsidize costs, such as student fees, and include a cost-of-living stipend and health insurance. In addition, some fellowships cover expenses for professional development opportunities, academic conferences, travel grants, and other funding for additional classes. They are funded by a wide range of organizations, foundations, and Tufts University as well.

In the Center for the Humanities, there are available Tufts Dissertation Fellowships or the Dean’s Dissertation Awards for students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. They should be studying theatre, dance and performance studies, English or history. These departments can nominate students for this fellowship award. Fellows will receive a stipend of $1,350 for twelve months and an additional award of $1,800 if their research is presented at conferences. This monetary award can increase up to $18,000. 4. Research and Teaching Assistantships

Tufts University also has scholarships in the form of assistantships to graduate students where students work as teaching and/or research assistants under the supervision of a faculty supervisor. An assistantship is one of the funding opportunities for master’s and doctoral students. The financial aid package consists of stipends, health insurance coverage, tuition fees, and other student fees coverage. Teaching assistantships involve assisting faculty members in teaching courses to undergraduate students, grade exams and papers, and other administrative and organizational tasks. On the other hand, research assistantships involve doing research-related tasks and creative activities.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offer teaching and research assistantships as part of graduate students’ professional development and training, and they will be provided a stipend. Teaching assistants work for a minimum of 10 hours a week for a whole semester. In addition, faculty supervisors are required to give mentoring, feedback, and assessment to RAs and TAs. These will provide opportunities for growth and performance improvement for students.
