TU Delft Scholarships for International Students

Are you considering completing a Masters abroad but anxious about the increased tuition fees, accommodation payments, and living expenses? Hope is not lost as all international students have a chance to study at the oldest and largest technological university in the Netherlands – for free! That’s right, you might find yourself learning in the beautiful, quaint country of beer, canals, windmills, and Van Gogh without having to pay anything.

The Delft University of Technology is currently the best in the world in Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure 2021 voted for by The World University Rankings. There are fully-funded scholarships available at TU Delft which we will take a look at.

Recently, the Dutch government decided to lower tuition fees for the entire country. So, even without a tuition fee bursary, you may still find Delft University of Technology a favorable option for postgraduate study.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Delft University of Technology

1. Justus and Louise van Effet Excellence Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fee and living expenses
  • Eligibility Criteria: Admitted on a 2-year MSc course, have achieved a GPA of 80% or higher, and obtained an undergraduate degree from a renowned university. Students must also exhibit promising excellence.

The highly coveted Justus and Louise van Effet Excellence Scholarship is awarded to two Masters students per faculty (16 scholarships in total). This TU Delft scholarship not only covers full tuition fees for each year of study, but the lucky awardees will receive a contribution to living expenses and a membership to the scholarship club where they have access to personal development workshops and seminars. Meaning, you can study in the Netherlands for free!

Your faculty will be looking for excellent students in honor of the scholarship’s namesake, Justus van Effet. He attended TU Delft in 1940 and aspired to contribute to the improvement of society by funding students’ technological developments and research. The foundation provides opportunities for outstanding international students who may require financial aid.

To apply, you must already be admitted on a two-year Masters course. You should then fill out a scholarship application to give the university insight into your career motivations, long-term goals, and personal interests and upload it along with an English test and two reference letters.

2. Faculty Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fee and living expenses
  • Eligibility Criteria: Study a qualifying MSc course, have achieved a GPA of 80% or higher, and obtained an undergraduate degree from a renowned university. Students must also exhibit promising excellence.

Four of the eight departments at TU Delft offer faculty scholarships, and so if you are intending on studying an MSc in Applied Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science, Industrial Design Engineering and Technology, Policy and Management you may be in luck!

Like the Justus and Louise van Effet Excellence Scholarship, these Faculty Scholarships offer to cover your full tuition fees and provide money towards living expenses. You must have an undergraduate degree from a renowned university outside the Netherlands and be signed up for a qualifying course to be considered. Each of the faculties has between one and five candidates to award this scholarship so there are plenty of chances to acquire a fully-funded scholarship at TU Delft.

3. QuTech Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fee
  • Eligibility Criteria: Study a qualifying MSc course, have achieved a GPA of 80% or higher, and obtained an undergraduate degree from a renowned university. Students must also exhibit promising excellence.
  • Degree Offered: 2-year MSc

QuTech Academy specializes in quantum computing and quantum internet, and they are offering, you guessed it, 12 fully-funded scholarships to students studying quantum-focused MSc courses. The courses required include Fault-tolerant Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Networked Computing, and Topological Quantum Computing amongst three others. Each course offers two scholarship opportunities. Again, the university is looking for promising, excellent students.

Not only this, but this TU Delft scholarship offers a very exciting, unique opportunity on top of the tuition fees. If you receive a 9 (90%) or higher in your MSc thesis project you will be offered a Ph.D. position at the university! So, for those aspiring academics interested in quantum computing and quantum internet, there really could not be a better prospect.

4. Holland Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: a one-off amount of €5000 with the potential to achieve 3 times up to a maximum of €15,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: students accepted on an MSc course from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) with an undergraduate degree from a renowned university.

This scholarship, awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Education Culture and Science along with Dutch and applied sciences research universities, is intended to assist students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) with living and studying expenses.

It is a one-off payment of €5000 in your first year, so, for those who have expensive textbooks, struggling to make rent, or require a new laptop, this might be the scholarship for you. This is not all they offer as you also have the opportunity of receiving this award up to three times (a maximum of €15,000) based on merit. There are five to six awarded within each of the eight departments, so 24 scholarships are available in total.

To apply for this TU Delft scholarship, you do not need to submit an extra form, you merely need two reference letters from either a previous professor, assistant professor, or employer, and an English test.
