1. International Graduate Program (A) MEXT Scholarships for Overseas Applicants

International students planning to study for an International Graduate Program (A), demonstrating competent academic performance in their undergraduate studies, may apply to the publicly funded Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. This scholarship program is available at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and is open for international students with a full-time admission offer to any of six sponsored IGP (A) postgraduate programs.

Interested applicants must have a solid academic performance in their undergraduate studies, as reflected in their records. Applicants must also have contacted an academic adviser for the prerequisite research proposal for admission to an IGP (A) program. The academic adviser should be a part of the Tokyo Tech Faculty. Specific English language proficiency is also required since the medium of instruction for all IGP (A) courses would be in English.

Applicants will be screened by the MEXT Scholarship selection committee based on academic performance, research feasibility, and credibility of the applicant to accomplish the research project. The admissions office will notify qualified applicants to accept the scholarship grant before admission to the program.

Upon acceptance, grantees will receive a full tuition fee waiver, round-trip airfare to japan, a monthly stipend of JPY 147,000 for Master’s Program students, or JPY 148,000 for Doctoral Program students. Grantees from the Integrated Doctoral Education Program are required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance while enrolled into the Master’s Program to receive the MEXT Scholarship benefits in Doctoral Program in their succeeding years.

2. International Graduate Program (A) Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship

The IGP (A) Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship for Overseas Applicants is one of the dedicated postgraduate international scholarships for international students with an IGP (A) postgraduate admission offer. Formally, this scholarship is known as the Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students by Pre-arrival Admission.

Enrollees of the Tokyo Institute of Technology for an IGP (A) postgraduate degree will be automatically screened for eligibility to receive this scholarship grant. Interested applicants only need to accomplish admission requirements to be eligible for screening. Admission requirements include affiliation with a Tokyo Tech research adviser and a prescribed English language proficiency level that varies in every department.

In addition to the minimum admission requirements, applicants must also declare their expected allowance per month, with a maximum of 90,000 yen per month. Applicants should also be self-funded and not receive government funding from their home countries to avoid conflict of interest.

The Admission Scholarships Office will notify qualified applicants to receive the scholarship offer. Upon acceptance, grantees will receive a monthly stipend of JPY 48,000, subject to change depending on the allocation of funds per academic year. Grantees will receive their monthly stipend for six months during their postgraduate study. This scholarship shall also not be accepted in conjunction with other scholarship grants at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

3. International Graduate Program (C) MEXT-SGU Scholarships

The International Graduate Program (C) MEXT-SGU Scholarships is open to all international students applying for a postgraduate degree under the Integrated Graduate Program (B). This merit-based entrance scholarship aims to support international students with demonstrated academic excellence in their undergraduate degrees.

The Japanese Government funds the International Graduate Program (C) MEXT-SGU Scholarships to support stellar international students applying for a postgraduate degree with university recommendations. University Recommendations ensure that grantees are of high caliber and demonstrate a profound interest in further education.

This scholarship is also limited to students from eligible countries, with the list available on the scholarships page. Students must also be enrolled in any IGP (C) programs, with a high preference for enrollees of the Tokyo Tech Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP). All enrollees of IGP (C) programs will be automatically screened for eligibility as an entrance scholarship.

The admissions office will notify successful applicants to accept the scholarship grant. Upon acceptance, grantees will receive a monthly stipend of JPY 147,000 for master’s students and JPY 148,000 for doctoral students. This stipend is subject to change as specified by the regulations of the MEXT Scholarship program. To continue receiving this Tokyo Institute of Technology scholarship grant, all grantees must reapply for every academic year.

4. ADB-JSP Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Monthly stipend from JYP 147,000, book allowance, thesis allowance, travel expenses, medical insurance, and others
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students from an ADB borrowing member and Japanese ODA scholarship eligible country

The Asian Development Bank, together with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, offers a scholarship grant that supports international students enrolled in a Master’s degree program under the Integrated Graduate Program (C) departments. This scholarship is a highly competitive merit-based scholarship grant providing financial support to its grantees.

Students eligible for the scholarship are international students with citizenship to an ADB borrowing member and Japanese ODA scholarship eligible country. A complete list of eligible countries can be found on ADB’s official website. Applicants must also manifest a superior academic record on their undergraduate studies, demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English language, and should not be more than 35 years old at the time of application.

With assistance from the scholarship’s office at Tokyo Tech, applicants shall submit all required documents for assessment of the selection committee. Qualifying applicants will advance to the interview sessions, where the applicant’s personal and professional goals are of great importance.

Qualified candidates will be notified by the admissions office to receive the scholarship offer from ADB. Upon acceptance of the scholarship grant, grantees will receive a monthly allowance of JPY 147,000 per month, a book allowance of JPY 100,000 per year, a thesis allowance of JPY 50,000 per year, travel expenses, medical insurance, and others. Specific amounts are subject to change, depending on the budget allocated to fund the scholarship program.
