Simon Fraser University Scholarships for International Students

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada. It was established in 1965 to expand higher education across Canada. As of 2021, it comprises more than 30,000 students within its three campuses located in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver.

Among SFU’s eight faculties, they offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The university is consistently ranked as one of the top world universities and has also received accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in 2015. Undergraduate Scholarships at Simon Fraser University

1. The SFU Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: minimum of 10,000 USD
  • Eligibility Criteria: high school student with great academic merit (minimum admission evaluation score of 90 %)

Simon Fraser University entrance scholarship is offered to students who show outstanding academic performance in high school as well as in their extracurricular activities. To be considered for the scholarship, the students must submit an application form. If successful, they receive a sufficient amount to cover tuition and mandatory fees.

Receivers of this scholarship can also apply for further funding to cover living expenses, but they have to submit proof of financial need. Besides the funding, students also receive mentorship, academic advising, and welcome sessions, etc.

2. EA Dick Asher Award in the Faculty of Applied Sciences

  • Scholarship Amount: minimum of 10,000 USD
  • Eligibility Criteria: undergraduate student with good academic merit, enrollment in any program within the School of Computing Science, completed at least 60 units, interest in a career in the gaming industry

EA Dick Asher Award in the Faculty of Applied Sciences is a scholarship available at Simon Fraser University offered to students who show great interest in pursuing a career in the gaming industry. Students have to be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, majoring at the School of Computing Science. Apart from good academic merit, the students have to write a single-page personal statement on why did they choose SFU’s computing science program and how this Award will help them in supporting their gaming interests. Students are nominated through the department.

3. Beedie Family Undergraduate Bursary for International Business Students

  • Scholarship Amount: 3,000 USD
  • Eligibility Criteria: undergraduate international student, business major, good academic merit (CGPA of at least 2.00), enrolled in a min. of 9 standard graded courses, financial need

The Beedie Undergraduate Bursary for International Business Students is offered to international students who are in financial need. Apart from this, they also have to be enrolled full-time in a major business program and have good academic merit. To be considered for the bursary, students have to apply through the university’s Student Information System. Beedie Family Undergraduate Bursary is only one of many financial aids offered to international students. When applying, each student will be considered for all bursaries available in the given year. The equivalent to this bursary is offered at the postgraduate level as well.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Simon Fraser University

1. Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship (GDES)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition + compulsory fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: great academic merit at the undergraduate and postgraduate level (CGPA of at least 3.50), great academic achievements at the postgraduate level, full-time enrollment in master’s or doctoral program

To be considered for the Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, the student must be nominated for the award by the Graduate Program Chair. They have to show outstanding academic performance on the undergraduate as well as on the postgraduate level, with a minimum CGPA of 3.50.

This Simon Fraser University scholarship covers tuition and mandatory fees for up to two years at the master’s level and up to four years at the doctoral program. The scholarship is meant to be held for successive terms, but can be placed on hold if the recipient goes ”on leave”. When the student is once again admitted to the program full-time, the scholarship is reinstated if approved by the Graduate Program Chair.

2. Glenn & Annetta Agnew Memorial Graduate Bursary

  • Scholarship Amount: 2,000 USD
  • Eligibility Criteria: full-time graduate student, enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences, or the Faculty of Science, good academic merit, financial need
  • Scholarship Link

Glenn & Annetta Agnew Memorial Graduate Bursary is offered to full-time graduate students who can demonstrate their financial needs. The students also have to show a good academic standing and be enrolled in either the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences, or the Faculty of Science. The application form has to be sent through STU’s Student Information System.

3. Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship (SGES)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition + compulsory fees for one or two academic years
  • Eligibility Criteria: great academic merit, letters of reference, awards, etc.

Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship was established to recruit students with great academic success to apply to the SFU. The students must be nominated by the academic unit Graduate Program Chair. They must also provide the university with proof of their outstanding academic performance and the accompanying letters of reference, possible previous awards, and other supporting documentation. If a student goes on leave, they can request to put the scholarship on hold. The reinstatement of the funding is granted only in exceptional circumstances.
