Semmelweis University is one of Hungary’s oldest universities founded in 1769. The university is not based on campus and so its buildings are located around Budapest, the country’s capital city. Semmelweis University teaches many of its courses in English and so attracts thousands of international students every year.

1. Erasmus Programme

The Erasmus Programme Scholarship allows current students at the university to spend from two months to a year at one of Semmelweis university’s partner institutions. This scholarship available at Semmelweis University will provide funding for the duration of the study abroad. Erasmus will provide between €540 and €750 per month to assist with living.

2. Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship

If you are from a Hungarian diaspora country, then this funding may be able to help you study at Semmelweis University. This scholarship intends to give opportunities to students from these locations and strengthen ties with their Hungarian roots. Students will then return to their countries with the knowledge and skills to help improve their home country whilst preserving their Hungarian origins.

Apply for this Semmelweis University scholarship through the Hungarian Diaspora website. You will need to upload a letter of motivation, recommendation letters, and other identification documents to be considered.

3. Stipendium Hungaricum (undergraduate and postgraduate programs)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition fee, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution, and medical insurance
  • Eligibility Criteria: accepted at a Hungarian University
  • Degree Offered: undergraduate and postgraduate

This scholarship contributes to a student’s tuition, living allowance, accommodation, and medical insurance. The money is not intended to cover all costs, merely to financially assist its recipients. For undergraduate and postgraduate students, the living allowance is €120 per month, and you will also be provided with a fully paid dormitory room. Alternatively, you could be provided with a contribution of HUF 40,000 towards accommodation.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Semmelweis University

1. Visegrad Scholarship program

  • Scholarship Amount: €2,500 per semester
  • Eligibility Criteria: citizens of Visegrad countries
  • Degree Offered: master’s and post-master’s studies

If you are from one of the Visegrad countries* then you could be eligible for this funding to help with your postgraduate study. The Visegrad Fund is offering to pay up to €2,500 per semester to the recipient of these scholarships. If you are enrolled on a master’s course, you can receive the money for up to four semesters and if you are a post-master’s student then you could receive the money for up to ten months!

It does not matter what your subject is as all subjectsare eligible for this Semmelweis University scholarship. To apply for this funding, head to the Visegrad website, fill out the application form, upload the relevant documents and submit.

Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine.

2. Fulbright Hungary

  • Scholarship Amount: $3,000 per academic year
  • Eligibility Criteria: American citizens holding a place to study at a Hungarian university
  • Degree Offered: postgraduate study

The Fulbright Program offers American students the opportunity to study abroad. This scholarship not only contributes financial help to its recipients but also provides access to a community that offers students cultural enrichment opportunities. If successful, you will be required to attend a four-day orientation in Budapest at the start of September to help you prepare for studying in Hungary.

There are seven scholarships to Hungarian Universities offered through Fulbright. Applications are accepted through the Fulbright website and the funding lasts for a maximum of nine months.

3. Stipendium Hungaricum (doctorate programs)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition fee, monthly stipend, accommodation contribution, and medical insurance
  • Eligibility Criteria: accepted at a Hungarian University
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

As with the Stipendium Hungaricum (undergraduate and postgraduate programs), you can also receive the Stipendium Hungaricum if you are one a doctorate program. This scholarship available at Semmelweis University gives doctorate students a tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend of €390 for the first phase of the study and €500 for the second phase. You will also be entitled to a free dormitory place or HUF 40,000 contribution towards accommodation.
