The Scuola Normale Superiore, or better known by the locals as La Normale, is a higher education institution with campuses in Pisa and Florence, Italy. It is a small but highly prestigious university with only about 600 students on campus. It was established way back in 1810. In fact, the Florence campus has been deemed as a historical site. It is currently ranked among the world’s top 250 universities, which is quite a feat considering its smaller size compared to other universities.

Undergraduate Scholarships at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa

1. Erasmus+ Program

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals from an Erasmus+ partner country, please refer to the eligible partner country list. To be considered eligible, one must already be enrolled at an Erasmus+ recognized university. They must also be in their second year of study.

This is a study abroad scholarship. Applicants will only be awarded up to 12 months of scholarship, but after this period, students are welcome to reapply for another 12 months.

All applications for the Erasmus+ program must be completed at your home university. Applications must be completed on or before June 30th for the first semester or September 30th for the second semester.

The amount awarded for this Scuola Normale Superiore scholarship depends, but it will cover full tuition and registration fees along with the student’s travel and living expenses. There is also extra financial aid available for students that are able to provide proof of financial need.

2. Independent Study Period for International Students

  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all international students. To be considered eligible, applicants must have a tutor from the Scuola Normale teaching staff that has accepted their application for independent study.

Before submitting their independent study request, the student must first choose someone from the Scuola Normale teaching staff to submit their tutor request application to. Once they accept the student’s application, the applicant may continue their request submission to the university.

There is no fixed application period deadline during their study period, but the university recommends applying at least two months before your intended study date.

The study period will last only for a maximum of one academic year. During their study period, they will have the same access to facilities and amenities as a regular Scuola Normale student. This includes the ability to attend lectures, seminars, and access to the library and laboratories, among other facilities. Applicants may also request accommodation so long as there is availability.

3. International Traineeship at Scuola Normale Superiore

  • Scholarship Amount: None
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all international students. To be considered eligible, applicants must have a tutor from the Scuola Normale teaching staff that has accepted their traineeship application. The applicant’s home university must also agree and be able to sign the internship agreement with the Scuola Normale. Lastly, the applicants must also obtain a risk declaration signed by their home university.

This traineeship will give international students a chance to carry out their traineeship or internship at the Scuola Normale laboratory.

There is no fixed application period deadline, but the university recommends applying a few months in advance before your intended traineeship date due to the lengthy and complex application process.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa

1. Ph.D. Admission Competition Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. Interested applicants must be considered academically excellent will be required to provide documents pertaining to their academic achievements from their previous studies. They must have already obtained their Master’s degree and are not over 32 years of age.

Additionally, applicants will have to undergo an interview and oral test once shortlisted. Applications must be submitted before February 22nd to the Scuola Normale Superiore.

Once the applicant receives admission into any Doctoral program at the Scuola Normale Superiore, this scholarship will automatically apply. This Scuola Normale Superiore scholarship will cover the full tuition fees, living expense assistance, and free meals from the facilities on campus. The initial enrolment fee and regional tax will also be reimbursed by the Scuola Normale Superiore.
