Among the most prestigious universities in Texas, Rice University is a popular choice for young scholars and artists. Rice has one professor per six undergrads, an incredibly supportive ratio. Here, we will be looking at scholarships at Rice University for international students.

Each undergraduate student is assigned to a residential college for their entire R.U. career. This system allows students and faculty members to explore each other’s cultures, interests, and passions while fostering growth and relationships that will last for years to come.

With a 300-acre campus filled to the brim with modern buildings, trees, and cultural opportunities, Rice acts as its own ecosystem in Texas. Students can engage in events on their large campus or travel into the city to experience all that Houston has to offer.

Rice University Scholarships for International Students

1. Merit Scholarships

Rice University is dedicated to making college affordable and accessible for all its students. Every accepted new student, international included, is automatically considered for all merit scholarships at Rice University. Students will receive news of their merit scholarship status when they receive their financial aid letter.

Merit aid is only awarded to students who have excelled in academics, the arts, or community organizations. Approximately 20% of the incoming freshmen class are awarded merit-based scholarships every year. Unfortunately, international transfer students are not considered for merit-based scholarships.

2. Fellowships

Rice has deep connections with several research-based organizations. These organizations have provided Rice with several federal grant programs that give stipends and tuition to graduate students. These stipends are used to cover living expenses, and they vary from $24,000 to $40,000. As well, they will occasionally offer internships in professional labs, which is a great way to practice graduate skills in the real world.

Rice continually shows its dedication to its students, and the graduate population is no exception. In fact, over 90% of new grad students are given Rice University scholraships when they are accepted. This package is meant to help them succeed on their academic journey without having to agonize over expenses; it includes a tuition waiver, a fellowship, and the occasional financial assistance from a specific department.

Rice also helps students apply for National Fellowships that will support their education. Students can speak to advisors and other faculty members for help with their applications.

3. Need-Based Aid

Rice University calculates this aid based on each applicant’s International Student Financial Statement. Unfortunately, international transfer students are not eligible for need-based aid, nor are those who forgot to indicate their need for it on their initial application.

Those who wish to apply for need-based scholarships at Rice University must complete the applications (or translate them) into English, and the currency must be in U.S. dollars as well. The applicant and their family must also explain how they will afford tuition if their available savings are below $74,500.

4. Student Employment

International students may apply for work opportunities on or off-campus, so long as they have an F-1, J-1, or other appropriate employment authorization. Students can consult with OISS advisors to discover what they need to do to access employment on campus.

There are several on-campus positions available to international students at Rice University. They can work at the Coffeehouse, as a research assistant (RA), or at Fondren Library.

One small thing: PhD students will most likely be required to work as an RA or TA, due to the requirements of their fellowship. Be sure to consult with an advisor if you are in this position to make sure your authorization is up to date.
