The campus in West Lafayette, Indiana is the most robust campus of the Purdue University system. The university has 13 schools and colleges and over 269 undergraduate and graduate programs for prospective students.

It is also ranked the 5th Most Innovative University by the U.S. News and World Report. The university has dedicated over $506 million to research and program development from federal and private sponsorship for 2019 to 2020 fiscal year.

Purdue University Scholarships

Purdue University offers departmental scholarships and a wide variety of external funding opportunities to international students. Tuition scholarships that cover partial to full tuition are reserved for Indiana residents and the United States nationals only. With this said, financial opportunities through merit-based scholarships are open to international students.

Scholarships for all academic levels are found in Purdue University’s Scholarship Universe. This search engine can be accessed once a prospective student applies for admissions at Purdue. Private scholarships from external funders are available at Purdue’s Scholarship Universe as well.

There are a variety of external funding opportunities available for undergraduate and graduate international students from the National and International Scholarship Office. Award amounts vary from small funding to thousands of dollars worth of financial support. These external scholarships require nomination from Purdue.

There are also fellowship and assistantship opportunities available for all Purdue students. Automatic consideration is extended upon application is submitted in any graduate program. Grants are also available for specific expenses that will enrich the academic experience of graduate students. This type of funding can be for travel, research, and even childcare.

1. Gilman Scholarship

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is an external scholarship offered to undergraduates interested in pursuing internships abroad. The funding will cover a portion of the study and internship abroad experience of its scholars. The scholarship is designed to enrich the educational experience of undergraduate students of Purdue.

Interested applicants for the Gilman Scholarship must already be accepted into an internship abroad. Recipients of this scholarship will also be granted a special hiring authority given by the United States government after graduation.

2. Charles C. Chappelle Fellowship

  • Scholarship Amount: at least $22,500 per year, living stipend, graduate tuition, and medical insurance benefit

This fellowship is reserved for prospective graduate students who completed an undergraduate degree from Purdue University. The scholarship provides one year of assistance to prospective graduate students.

This Purdue University scholarship is given based on character and strong academic potential. Interested applicants must submit an essay, a CV, and a transcript of records to be considered for the degree. The Charles C. Chappelle Fellowship is a form of direct apply fellowship. This means that students who have applied to admissions will not be automatically considered unless they pass a direct application for the fellowship.

3. Ludwig Kruhe Fellowship

  • Eligible Degrees: Ph.D. Programs in Agricultural Economics, Civil Engineering, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Management, Economics, and Political Science
  • Scholarship Amount: At least $22,500 a year, tuition and medical insurance

This scholarship is for Purdue University’s Ph.D. students interested in gaining a deeper understanding of global relations and issues. Similar to the Chappelle Fellowship, the Ludwig Kruhe Fellowship requires interested applicants to directly apply to be considered.

Submission requirements include a CV, an abstract of academic achievements, and an essay on the applicant’s interest in global issues. Additionally, documents from the applicant’s respective Department Head and Research Advisor are needed.

4. Recruitment Fellowship Opportunities

  • Scholarship Amount: $19,667 per year, tuition coverage, and medical insurance

Purdue University has Recruitment Fellowships for prospective Ph.D. Students. This type of fellowship is awarded by the faculty to academically excellent who show great promise. All fellowships under this cluster cover four academic years of graduate study. Recipients of each fellowship receive the same benefits.

Additionally, fellows of Purdue are given travel allowance to accommodate travel expenses to research sites and conferences.

The Recruitment Fellowships at Purdue include the Fredrick N. Andrews Fellowship, the Lynn Fellowship, the Purdue Doctoral Fellowship, and the Ross Fellowship.

Each fellowship has different criteria for awarding and recipients are decided upon by the respective awarding program.

5. Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships at Purdue University are offered to all graduate students enrolled in any graduate degree program. The majority of the graduate students at Purdue University take on assistantships to enrich their educational experience. Additionally, this provides comprehensive financial support as they complete a degree.

Graduates can apply for teaching and research assistantships which require them to work closely with an assigned faculty. Another option for international graduate students is administrative or professional assistantships. This type of assistantship does not involve research or teaching.

Undergraduate departments at Purdue University offer scholarships to prospective international students. Application for departmental scholarships is made through the completion of the admission application.

Prospective international undergraduate students in Education, Health & Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, and the Polytechnic Institute must complete a Purdue Supplemental Scholarship Application to be considered for scholarships.

Additionally, other scholarships require a direct application to the awarding department. These departmental scholarships that require direct application include scholarships in the field of Agriculture, Education, Engineering, and Liberal Arts.
