Osaka University, otherwise known as Handai, is a public research university based in the Osaka Prefecture of Japan. It is an extremely prestigious university that is consistently ranked among the top three public universities in Japan and is also ranked 75th worldwide. Because of this, admission into the university is highly competitive and the entrance exam difficulty is amongst the hardest in Japan as they only accept the brightest students. Undergraduate Scholarships at Osaka University

1. Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Honors Scholarship For Privately Financed International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: 48,000 yen per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all international students. The applicant must have already applied for and received admission into Osaka University. Additionally, the student must possess a superior academic record and provide proof for any academic or personal achievements. Lastly, the student must be able to provide proof of financial needs or that they are in economic distress.

Updates for this scholarship available at Osaka University will be distributed by means of printed notices on the university bulletin boards. It is the applicant’s responsibility to regularly view these boards to find out more about the designated application period.

This scholarship does not have any course restrictions. Students from any course of study are welcome to apply.

2. Full Tuition Fee Exemption Program

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to Japanese nationals and permanent or special permanent residents of Japan. The applicant must have received admission into Osaka University and is currently in the process of enrollment. During the admission procedures, the student must submit an ‘Application Form for Expected Exemption’ along with the required admission documents. The applicant must also provide a valid reason as to why they would be unable to finance the tuition fees themselves.

This Osaka University scholarship is only available to students about the enter their first year at the university. If the applicant completes their admission procedures without submitting the application form for this scholarship, they will automatically be considered ineligible.

3. Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) International Student Acceptance Promotion Program

  • Scholarship Amount: 48,000 yen per month
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all international students. The applicant must have already received and accepted an offer of admission into Osaka University. The applicant must have the status of ‘College Student’ and are not currently sponsored by the Japanese government. Additionally, the applicant must have already completed the enrollment process for admission into Osaka University. Lastly, the student must possess an above-average academic track record and is able to meet both the Japanese and English language proficiency standards.

It is not possible to receive financial aid from this program along with other scholarships or forms of financial assistance. It is also not applicable for students that are sponsored by a foreign government.

The scholarship amount will be granted for 12 months. For more information on the extension of this scholarship, please contact Osaka University.

The application will be submitted through Osaka University, but the designated application period varies. Once again, interested applicants are encouraged to reach out to the university for more details.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Osaka University

1. Tuition Fee Exemption Program

  • Scholarship Amount: Half or Full tuition fees
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to Japanese nationals and permanent or special permanent residents of Japan only. The candidate must have been accepted to Osaka University and be in the process of enrollment. The student must submit an ‘Application Form for Expected Exemption’ together with the appropriate admission papers during the admissions process. The applicant must also offer a genuine cause for their inability to pay the tuition costs on their own.

Applicants will be screened in order to determine whether they will receive a full or partial tuition fee exemption. The applicant must submit the application for this scholarship during their admission procedure and before they complete the enrollment. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility for this Osaka University scholarship.

The application period is also subject to change. Therefore, interested applicants must contact Osaka University or visit the Osaka University website for notices on the chosen application dates.

2. Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Disaster Subventions Program

  • Scholarship Amount: 100,000 yen
  • Eligibility Criteria: Open to all nationals. The applicant must already be an existing student enrolled at Osaka University during the occurrence of a natural disaster. The applicant will be required to provide details of the damage incurred from the disaster, the type of disaster, and their address of residence. The applicant will also be required to obtain a ‘Disaster Victim Certificate’ from their local government to confirm the extent of damage incurred.

Only one application per disaster will be permitted. The student must also not include any damage that was incurred prior to their enrollment at Osaka University. It is also possible to apply for this grant while receiving other forms of financial support. Individuals who are hoping to receive this scholarship are encouraged to apply for this grant as soon as possible.
