It has eleven schools that offer a wide variety of programs across all levels – undergraduate and graduate. It is one of the largest universities in the United States, with over 379-acre of land located in Chicago. In addition, Northwestern University has two more campuses in Evanston and Qatar.

Northwestern University Scholarships

Northwestern University prides itself on its prominent diverse culture that is enriched by its community. The university’s international student body comes from over 100 countries across the globe. With that, it continues to grant scholarships for those who want to experience what it is like to be a Northwestern student. In the school year 2020-2021, it has awarded $200 million to undergraduate students. The financial aid packages offered by Northwestern is in the form of scholarship, fellowship, assistantship, loans, and grants. Below are some of the financial aid provided to undergraduate and graduate international students.

1. Northwestern University Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $250 to $40,000 annually

Northwestern University offers this scholarship for undergraduate students based on financial need. Domestic and international undergraduate students can apply for this scholarship after being selected from the other scholarships offered by the university, including the Northwestern University Endowed Scholarships. The Northwestern University Scholarship is a component of a financial aid package. Scholars will receive $250 to $40,000 grants annually.

2. Founders Scholarship

To honor the founders of Northwestern University in 1850, the Founders Scholarship Program was created in 2007. Since then, nine individuals from middle-income families have received financial aid every year. Aside from evaluating the students’ financial needs, eligible candidates are reviewed based on their academic credentials and extracurricular engagement. This scholarship is offered to undergraduate students, both domestic and international. When selected, students can renew the scholarship throughout their undergraduate degree, given that they maintain the scholarship and program-specific requirements. In addition, they will receive a grant of $13,200.

3. Comer Scholarship

Northwestern University’s Medill: School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications offers the Comer Scholarship. This Northwestern University scholarship is awarded to outstanding master’s students of journalism, and both international and domestic students can apply. Scholars receive financial aid that covers almost half the cost of their tuition in their one-year master’s degree program. In addition to their financial aid package, they can also apply for private research loans. They will also have an opportunity to travel abroad to further their studies and enhance their academic and professional experiences. In addition, they will be working at radio stations, newspapers, and other media outlets and attend the Comer Climate Change Conference administered by the Comer Foundation in Wisconsin.

4. Graduate Fellowships

The Graduate School of Northwestern University offers fellowships to their graduate students that include a financial aid package containing monthly stipends and tuition coverage. First-year doctoral students can apply for these fellowships that are offered as internal and external fellowships. Internal fellowships are funded by the university and the specific department while external fellowships are funded by outside organizations and institutions. In addition, they will be given opportunities to have assistance in their research and dissertation writing and study abroad to widen their learning experiences.

For example, doctoral or MFA students of the Humanities program can apply for the Beiling Wu Prize in Writing fellowship. Fellows will be selected based on the essay they will write in the first year of their program, which is the requirement of the Beiling Wu fellowship. 5. Research and Teaching Assistantships

Northwestern University offers graduate assistantships to its graduate students across all departments. Graduate assistantships include teaching and research assistantships where students will receive a monthly stipend and coverage of tuition fees and health insurance. Teaching assistantships include tasks that involve offering administrative support to the university faculty. Examples of tasks are but are not limited to: grading assignments and teaching undergraduate courses. On the other hand, research assistantships include research-related tasks, such as assisting faculty members on their research projects. While doing assistantships, students are expected to do their academic training. They will have an opportunity to develop academically and professionally by making connections that will last a lifetime.

One department that offers graduate assistantships is the Kellog School of Management, mostly for Ph.D. students. With this assistantship program, students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities while performing their appointed tasks. They will be expected to work for 10 hours a week as research assistants, while approximately 5 hours as teaching assistants. They will receive a stipend, health insurance coverage, tuition fees coverage, and other student fee coverage. This financial aid package is renewable for five years provided that the students will maintain program-specific degree requirements.
