National University of Ireland Scholarships for International Students

The National University of Ireland is not a university in a typical sense, but it is a system of constituent colleges spread around the country. Each of these universities distributes awards from ‘The National University of Ireland’. So, studying under this university gives you the chance to live in this country full of life and culture.

Ireland is famous for creating iconic literature, music, and art, along with its lively nightlife, there is something for everyone. The National University of Ireland does offer loads of impressive scholarships that give you the chance to study in this beautiful country, see below for a list of the best ones.

National University of Ireland Scholarships

All levels of Study Scholarships at National University of Ireland

1. Government of Ireland – International Education Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: €10,000 stipend for one academic year of studying and a full tuition fee waiver
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students (outside the EU/EAA) who hold an offer at the university
  • Degree Offered: undergraduate, master’s, or PhD

The Irish government is offering a fully-funded study opportunity for international students at all levels of study and all subjects. Not only will the awardee receive a full tuition fee waiver, but there is also a €10,000 stipend for the full academic year. Competition for this scholarship available at the National University of Ireland is quite tight as there are only 60 scholarships available for students attending universities all over Ireland.

This means that the applicants must display impressive academic and communication skills. The awarding board will also be looking for evidence of extra-curricular activities and a strong desire to pursue their studies in Ireland.

2. The Dr. H H Stewart Literary Scholarships and Prizes

  • Scholarship Amount: €1,000 and a medal
  • Eligibility Criteria: students completing an undergraduate offer at the university and studying one of the selected eight subjects
  • Degree Offered: undergraduate

The NUI has been offering these scholarships since 1888 and are the oldest awards the university grants. If your course is in, Chinese, English, French, German, Irish, Italian, Latin, or Spanish, then you could be eligible for the prize. There are three prizes offered, all of which include a medal and the first prize also includes €1,000. Each of the subject mentioned offer three awards.

These National University of Ireland scholarships are given to students who are currently studying at the university and have completed their stage one modules. Students cannot apply for these awards directly. They are merely given to those with the highest grades on the course.

3. The Dr. H H Stewart Medical Scholarships and Prizes (including Health Sciences)

  • Scholarship Amount: €1,000 and a medal
  • Eligibility Criteria: students holding an undergraduate offer at the university and studying a degree within the sciences

Dr. Henry Hutchinson Stewart originally funded these awards from the bequest of his estate and the terms stated that two-thirds of the income be granted to medical students. The other third goes to literary scholars (see above).

This award goes to students from students in Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, and Health Sciences. There are more specific subjects within these departments, so check out the scholarship page if you feel you may be eligible. As with the literary scholarships, each subject has three awards available.

Postgraduate Scholarships at National University of Ireland

1. The Mansion House Fund Scholarships and Prizes

  • Scholarship Amount: up to €2,500
  • Eligibility Criteria: completed a BA with a focus on Irish studies or Irish History
  • Degree Offered: master’s
  • Scholarship Link

This National University of Ireland scholarship is intended to encourage students to continue their studies in Irish Language, Literature, and History. There are several eligible undergraduate degrees within this scholarship, including, Modern, Early, Medieval and Classical, or any combination of these. Successful recipients are chosen based on the results of their final examinations.

There are two of these awards, one is worth €1,300 and the other worth €2,000. Candidates are automatically enrolled if eligible, so no need to put together an application pack!

2. NUI Dr. Mary L Thornton Scholarship and Prize in Education

  • Scholarship Amount: either €6,000 or €1,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: doctoral students in the field of education enrolled at the university
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.
  • Scholarship Link

This scholarship and the corresponding award hope to encourage academics to research within the field of Education. Preference is given to applicants who are exploring Irish Higher Education. However, anyone committing to research within the field is welcome to apply.

To apply for this scholarship, you must submit a research proposal of a maximum of 3,000 words, a research proposal abstract, a CV, your academic transcripts, two academic references, and the application form. The shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview. Successful candidates will either receive a full scholarship of €6,000 or a prize of €1,000.

3. Travelling Doctoral Studentships

  • Scholarship Amount: €24,000 per annum (a €16,000 stipend and €8,000 towards tuition fees)
  • Eligibility Criteria: Must hold a first-class undergraduate or master’s degree,
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

The NUI has been gifting this Travelling Doctoral Scholarship to Ph.D. candidates since 1901. There is the chance to receive a total of €24,000 per year for a maximum of four years, meaning this scholarship available at the National University of Ireland could potentially gift €96,000 to the student throughout their degree.
