To foster academic diversity, the Chinese Government offers a prestigious scholarship program for postgraduate studies in the hopes of attracting international students to study at Nanjing University. Through this scholarship available at Nanjing University, the Chinese government hoped to increase mutual understanding, strengthen cooperation, and wield vital communication between countries in the fields of education, technology, culture, and economics.

Applicants with an offer for a master’s or doctoral degree within the sponsored fields of study are eligible to apply for this scholarship program. Applicants for a master’s degree shall not be older than 35, and doctoral degree applicants shall not be older than 40. Language requirements will also be required based on the field of study the applicants have chosen.

To apply for the scholarship, applicants need to submit their applications on the CSC Website and the Nanjing University – China International Student Service System, respectively. Documents required to be uploaded on the online application forms include academic transcripts, certificate of highest diploma, two recommendation letters from professors of the applicant’s recent school, and other documents proving that the applicant met the minimum requirements for the scholarship. Qualified applicants will be notified via system messaging or through an email and shall promptly follow the procedures on how to accept the scholarship offer. Grantees may enjoy the scholarship grant for two to four years, depending on the program requirements. Grantees are also subject to the annual scholarship evaluation program, where students who pass the evaluation will be enjoying the scholarship grant for another year.

2. Chinese Government Scholarship – Belt and Road Program

As a part of the Chinese government’s One Belt One Road initiative, Nanjing University offers a scholarship program funded by the national government to support international students hailing from the 69 Belt and Road countries, sustaining their educational experience in China’s forefront universities. With an emphasis on the fields of education, technology, culture, and economics, this scholarship aims to strengthen relations within the belt and road countries.

Aside from applicants being residents or citizens of the 69 participating belt and road countries, applicants must not be older than 35 years of age on the date of application. Applicants must also achieve a certain level of proficiency in either Mandarin or English, depending on the medium of instruction of the programs they intend to study.

Like other scholarship grants offered through the initiative of the Chinese government, applicants must submit two forms in different online platforms – one for the CSC Website and another for the Nanjing University – China International Student Service System. As this scholarship is geographically bound, applicants need to submit a copy of their passport’s first page for verification. Other documents to be submitted include a transcript of records from their respective universities, reference letters written by professors of their previous institutions, language proficiency test results, and others. Documents written neither in English nor in Chinese should be accompanied by a notarized translation.

3. Nanjing Municipal Scholarship

Since 2013, the municipal government of Nanjing has been dedicated to strengthening its education and research capacity for science and technology. And as an extension of this vision, the Nanjing Municipal Scholarship program has been implemented to attract and encourage more research-driven international students with monthly cash incentives.

This scholarship available at Nanjing University incentivizes postgraduate students with ongoing scientific research based on the municipality of Nanjing. The scholarship is also given to selected undergraduate students and one-year Chinese language students. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with good academic standing, physically and mentally fit, and also have friendly relations with Chinese citizens and to its culture at large.

Interested applicants, both incoming and old students of Nanjing University, can apply for the scholarship. Applicants are requested to prepare documents such as a digitally signed PDF file of the official application form, a recommendation letter from a university professor, and an applicant’s promise form. For old students, a copy of their transcript of records is requested. For new applicants, a copy of their admission notice to Nanjing University and a personal statement essay is requested. These documents shall be submitted online with the corresponding file type and file name, both of which can be found on the scholarship’s webpage.

4. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

This scholarship is for postgraduate students who are passionate about teaching the Chinese language in order to meet the growing international demand for this profession. The scholarship is also given to selected undergraduate students and one-year and one-semester Chinese language students. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, have no criminal records, be physically and mentally fit, have good academic standing, interested in language education-related work, and be between 16 and 35 years old.

Applicants interested in this Nanjing University scholarship shall hold an offer to a master’s degree in Nanjing University. Applicants should also display notable academic records and be in good health. Applicants receiving scholarship grants from the Chinese government or other award-giving organizations shall not be qualified for this scholarship grant.

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship program provides full coverage of tuition, accommodation, living, and medical insurance expenses. If students choose to live off-campus, they will be given an accommodation allowance of 1,000 CNY and 700 CNY per month for doctoral and other students, respectively.

Interested applicants may apply online as stated on the scholarship website. Applicants will then fill up the designated application form and upload all necessary documents to the online portal. Qualified applicants will then be notified through writing and shall be informed of the procedures for accepting the scholarship offer.
