Now, it is considered one of Japan’s ‘comprehensive’ universities, taking pride in its schools and institutes’ various programs and facilities.

Undergraduate Scholarships at Nagoya University

1. Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship – Undergraduate

  • Scholarship Amount: 117,000 yen monthly stipend; additional monthly stipend worth 3,000 yen
  • Eligibility Criteria: 4th-year undergraduate student

Independently financed international students on the 4th year of their undergraduate program may apply for a Japanese Government Scholarship through their university. The government body in charge of the offer is the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho). Only a few students are granted the scholarship every year.

Interested students may submit their grade point average (GPA), which should be based on the Monbukagakusho methodology. More details regarding eligibility, application and other information about this scholarship at Nagoya University should be discussed with the university.

2. Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: 48,000-yen monthly stipend
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Full-time, financially independent student
    • must have a student visa
    • not a recipient of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship or other government scholarships

Outstanding, financially independent students may apply for a scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organizations (JASSO). To qualify, students must be financially needy and meet the minimum GPA of JASSO. If awarded the scholarship, the maximum duration of the offer is 12 months only.

To apply for this scholarship at Nagoya University, students must submit their GPA from the previous year, and it should be based on the JASSO methodology. The minimum GPA requirement set by JASSO is 2.30 for those at the undergraduate level. Aside from that, they must also meet specific minimum language requirements. The student must discuss other information like additional eligibility requirements, application, and requirements with Nagoya University.

3. Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan)

  • Scholarship Amount: 80,000-yen monthly stipend

    • Originating from countries with diplomatic relations with Japan

Students accepted for an exchange program with Nagoya University may apply for a Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). The duration of the program may range from eight days to 1 year. Students must continue their studies in their original institution once the program ends. Those who receive more than 80,000 yen from other scholarships are no longer qualified for the offer.

Application for the offer is done through Nagoya University. Each university has a unique selection method. Thus, students may inquire with the university for more information about the application. Nagoya will forward the applications to JASSO for review, and then JASSO will inform the university of the results.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Nagoya University

1. Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship – Research Students

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • Master’s – 144,000-yen monthly stipend, 3,000-yen additional monthly stipend
    • PhD – 145,000-yen monthly stipend, 3,000-yen additional monthly stipend

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology offers scholarships for financially independent international students. Aside from those enrolled to specific degrees, non-degree students may also apply for the scholarship.

Also, undergraduate students who are recipients of this Nagoya University scholarship may apply for an extension when they pursue graduate studies in the subsequent year. However, not all applications for extensions are granted; thus, their credentials must be competitive. There is a minimum GPA the applicant must meet, which they can inquire about through the university.

2. Admission Fee Exemption

  • Scholarship Amount: 50% or 100% of total entrance fee

Graduate students may apply to have their admission fee exempted or reduced, provided that they meet one of these conditions: (1) student is financially needy, and an academic achiever, (2) person student is dependent on for educational expenses has died, or (3) person student is dependent on, or student was affected by a natural disaster.

Usually, graduate students are granted a 50% reduction of their total admission fee. The guidelines for the application process for admission fee exemption are provided along with the entrance procedures. Thus, students may prepare for the requirements and process along with the application.

3. Tuition Fee Exemption

Graduate students who are academically outstanding but have difficulties paying for their tuition may apply for a tuition fee exemption. Students may also apply for this Nagoya University scholarship if the person they rely on for academic expenses died or was affected by a natural disaster. Other similar conditions may also be considered.

Application for the tuition fee exemption is only made once a year; thus, if a student wishes to have their tuition exempted for both semesters of that year, they must apply for both at the same time. However, evaluation for these applications will still be done twice a year. There will be no refund if the student pays for the fees before the exemption is granted.
