Founded in 1964, Lancaster University is one of the newer but highly competitive institutions in the United Kingdom. They are one of the few in the UK to have a collegiate system and are consistently ranked as one of the top schools based on various university rankings. Lancaster University has a total of nine colleges divided into four departments and offers over 200 programs for undergraduate, postgraduate studies, and postgraduate research. The total student population of the university is over 16,000, with almost 30% being EU and international students.

In recent years, Lancaster University has held strong and consistent rankings in the UK and worldwide rankings. They are placed as top 10 in the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide and The Guardian University Guide. They sit in the 132nd spot in the QS World University Rankings 2022 and 122nd in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Their research and student satisfaction survey results of over 85% also exceed the average, thus proving the university’s excellence and success across all aspects.

Lancaster University Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at Lancaster University

1. The Peel Trust Studentship

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 2,500
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • UK nationals and international students
    • 21 years of age or above

The Peel Trust Studentship was founded in 1964 through donations from the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust. This scholarship at Lancaster University supports 25 students each year who are enrolled in any degree and field of study at the university. The application process will be posted on the university’s website each academic year, and decisions made by the Trustees are on the basis of the applicant’s academic standing and financial hardship. A total of GBP 2,500 will be received by the chosen 25, which will be paid for in three installments.

2. JMWM Hussain Foundation Scholarship

The JMWM Hussain Foundation Scholarship is made possible by the donations of a generous Lancaster University alumnus, offering five awards each year. The scholarship is open to all undergraduate students however, priority is given to those from a Widening Participation background and those presenting financial struggles to pay for their academic fees. The scholarship amounting to GBP 1,000 will be awarded at the end of the academic year.

3. Donald & Margot Watt Bursary Fund (FASS and FST only)

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 1,000 to GBP 2,000

    • Enrolled under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or Faculty of Science and Technology
    • All grade levels except first-years

In honor of late alumni, Donald, and his wife Margot Watt, the fund was established in 2014 to support financially challenged students who were academic performers in their previous school year. Applications are open to students enrolled under the eligible programs of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or Faculty of Science and Technology. To be considered for this scholarship at Lancaster University, the student must not have received any university scholarship in the previous year and must have achieved an overall aggregation score of 17.5. The scholarship award amounts to GBP 1,000 or GBP 2,000, depending on the grantee’s academic merit and financial need. Applications are made through this page.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Lancaster University

1. Lancaster University Global Scholarship (Africa)

  • Scholarship Amount: GBP 3,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: Permanent resident and national of Africa
  • Degree Offered: Master’s

The Lancaster University Global Scholarship is offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Lancaster University. African students are invited to pursue any of the Master’s degree courses in the faculty. This aims to further enrich the diverse community of the university as well as mold great students who will bring home knowledge that can help their country when they get back. All eligible applicants are automatically considered for the scholarship, and those who will be accepted will receive GBP 3,000 in the form of a fee discount.

2. Alumni Loyalty Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: 10% or 20% fee reduction

    • Holds a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from Lancaster University
    • UK nationals and international students

Bachelor’s and Master’s alumnae of Lancaster University can apply for the Alumni Loyalty Scholarship if they plan to continue or take a second Master’s degree in the institution. Students can receive a 10% up to 20% fee reduction, which will automatically be deducted from their tuition invoice. The value of this Lancaster University scholarship will be based on the applicant’s academic ranking.

3. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Doctoral Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: Tuition fee coverage and a maintenance award of GBP 15,000
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • UK nationals and international students
    • Students enrolled under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is the biggest faculty at Lancaster University. This scholarship is open to Doctoral students enrolled in one of their more than twenty fields of study. Applications for the scholarship must be made once the student has confirmed their place in their chosen program.

This scholarship at Lancaster University is open to students of all nationalities however, two of the slots are reserved for UK applicants from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups. Chosen candidates will be awarded full tuition coverage, plus a maintenance award of GBP 15,000 each year for up to three years. The continuation of the scholarship each academic year is subject to approval, depending on the student’s academic performance. Student work is also usually required– the hours vary and will be discussed further upon commencement of the scholarship.
