Undergraduate Scholarships at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

1. Institute Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • Women – Women Merit Scholarship worth Rs. 10,000 per year; tuition fee exemption; scholarship worth up to 40,000 per year
    • Others – tuition fee exemption; scholarship worth up to 40,000 per year

The Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarship is granted based on academic merit (merit criterion) and economic background (means criterion). For the merit criterion, the UCEED rank of first-year students for certain programs will be used for assessment. For their subsequent years, the academic performance from the previous academic year will be used. Meanwhile, the applicant’s parents must not have an annual gross income of more than Rs for the means criterion. 5,000,000.

This scholarship at IIT Bombay will also depend on this income, with an income up to Rs. 1 Lakh receiving Rs. 40,000 per year; those up to 3 Lakhs receive Rs. 30,000 per year; and those up to Rs. 5 Lakhs get 20,000 per year. The scholarship duration is the standard duration of the scholar’s program and will depend on their academic performance. Scholars can no longer become recipients of other scholarships. They must also submit an Income Certificate copy or Income Tax Return of their parents for the application.

2. Remission of Fees

  • Scholarship Amount: 2/3 to full tuition fees remission

Students from the B. Tech, Dual Degree (B. Tech + M. Tech), B.S. and B. Des. programs may apply to receive remission of their tuition fees. They are considered eligible for this IIT Bombay scholarship if their parents’ gross income from the previous year is Rs. 5,000,000/annum and below, without standard deductions. Those whose parents’ incomes are below Rs. 1 Lakh per annum may receive full remission of the fees. Those who have incomes below Rs. 5 Lakhs per annum but above Rs. 1 Lakh may get up a remission worth 2/3 of their tuition fees.

3. Teaching Assistantship for DD Programmes in their 5th Year

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • CPI of 8.00 and above/valid GATE score – Rs. 12,400 per month
    • CPI between 6.00 to 7.99 – Rs. 6,000 per month
    • CPI less than 6.00 – Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000

The Teaching Assistantship (TAship) program is available for students pursuing a dual degree in B. Tech + M. Tech or B. Des. + M. Des. The teaching assistantship rate depends on their cumulative performance index (CPI) or graduate aptitude test engineering (GATE) score. For those who have a CPI of below 6.00, the department may submit a recommendation for the award of reduced financial support. This will be based on duties assigned and skill set.

This IIT Bombay scholarship is payable for 12 months or until the date of defense, whichever comes first. Teaching assistants must submit a certificate and attendance report every month to their heads. This is to confirm that they have provided satisfactory assistance for the month. These will be forwarded by the department for the assistantship to be processed.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

1. Ph.D. Programme for International Students

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $430 per month
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • For engineering candidates – at least 4-year Bachelor’s degree
    • For science candidates – Master’s degree or equivalent
    • 60% or equivalent GPA
    • Qualified for GRE and TOEFL/IELTS

The Ph.D. Programme for International Students in IITB offers financial assistance through a teaching assistantship. If getting this IIT Bombay scholarship, students will assist in teaching or research for up to 8 hours a week in exchange for a monthly rate of $385 for the first two years and $430 for the next two years. The maximum scholarship length is five years or until thesis submission, whichever is earlier. An application fee must be paid along with the submission of the application form.

2. MHRD Postgraduate Assistantship – M.S. by Research

  • Scholarship Amount: up to Rs. 15,400 per month

An MHRD Postgraduate Assistantship is provided for students of M.S. by research. The scholarship benefits depend on the category and total period of the fellowship. For those in the TA category, the standard duration is two years maximum, beginning on the day the fellow joins the program until the last due date of the final stage presentation or actual date of presentation. It may also end on the date of change of category or date of cancellation of registration. The amount to be received is Rs. 12,400 per month for the two years but may be extended by a maximum of 1 year.

The standard duration for this IIT Bombay scholarship is three years for those in the RA category, with the same ending dates as the TA category. The fellowship amount is 13,400 per month for the first year, and an annual increment of Rs.1000 per year will be granted for the following years. For instance, for the second year, they will receive Rs. 14,400 per month, while for the third year, they will get Rs. 15,400 per month. The fellowship is also subject to attendance and academic performance.

3. Private Ph.D. Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • SJM School of Management Endowment Scholarship – up to Rs. 31,000 per month
    • IITB Monash Scholarship – up to Rs. 39,000 per month
    • EATON Technologies Pvt. Ltd. – up to Rs. 35,000 per month; additional Rs.1,500 for attending a national/international conference
    • SERB (Purdue Visiting Doctoral Fellowship) – $2,000 per month; one-time contingency grant of Rs. 60,000; onward journey fair

Various private institutions and companies offer scholarships for Ph.D. students in IIBT. The benefits depend on the fellowship. The selection procedure also depends on the institute or department – for the SJM School of Management Endowment Scholarship, the selection is based on the institution.
