Howard University (HU) is a private research university in Washington, DC. It is classified as an R2: Doctoral University by the Association of American Universities and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Howard University is ranked as the 34th best undergraduate teaching program in the United States by the U.S. News and World Reports. It is part of the top 100 Universities by the same publication.

HU has over 140 programs for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in its 13 schools and colleges. Additionally, the university offers its students a variety of study abroad and exchange programs to enrich their overall educational experience. Students have a rich selection of more than 200 student organizations and clubs. Aside from notable academic credentials, HU is home to Howard University Hospital, one of the most comprehensive hospitals in Washington.

The university has produced notable alumni renowned in the fields of politics, governance, law, and medicine.

Today, we will discuss some of the scholarships available at Howard University.

Howard University Scholarships

Howard University offers numerous scholarship opportunities and financial aid to international students. Prospective first-year undergraduate students are offered need-based financial aid upon admission to the university. Aside from this, merit-based scholarships and grants are also available for undergraduate students.

Merit-based scholarships for undergraduate freshmen are also available. Work programs are also open for undergraduate students. Financial opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students may come from internal funding or external donors and sponsors. Graduate students may apply for fellowships or competitive assistantship posts to help fund their studies. Additionally, students may apply for internal and external grants and scholarships to help cover the cost of their education. 1. Need-based Financial Aid

The first type of Howard University scholarship we will talk about is actually the International Student Financial Aid Application. This financial aid is awarded to bright international students to help fund their studies.

The applicant is required to fill out the ISFAA file to be offered financial assistance. Students are required to provide supporting financial documentation to be assessed by the Office of Financial Aid.

Need-based financial aid varies per student and depends on the student’s Expected Family Contribution. With this said, students are also assessed in their academic achievement and leadership experiences in High School.

2. Howard University Freshman Scholarships (HUFS)

Howard University Freshman Scholarships are merit-based awards available to all prospective undergraduate students. All incoming students are considered for the scholarship upon applying for admission.

These scholarships include the HU Presidential Scholarship, the HU Achievers Scholarship, the HU Founders Scholarship, the HU Capstone Scholarship, the HU Leadership Scholarship, the HU Opportunity Grant, and the HU Access Grant.

Recipients of any of the scholarships will receive the award for up to four years after enrollment. Eligibility requirements may vary per scholarship but grades and official test scores are the primary basis of awarding.

3. Graduate Assistantships

  • Scholarship Amount: Coverage of Full Tuition and $20,000 Yearly Stipend

Graduate Assistantships are competitive enriching experiences for selected graduate students. Assistantships entail 15 hours a week of work and can be one of four categories. This includes teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships, research assistantships, and administrative internships.

Maximum appointments for graduate assistantships are one full academic year.

Additional financial opportunities for graduate students holding assistantships can be obtained from grants and additional fellowships.

Students may apply for assistantships to the chair of graduate studies at HU. Students interested to hold assistantships must be in full-time status and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Additionally, they must demonstrate a strong sensitivity for intercultural communication and proficiency in English.

4. Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowship

  • Scholarship Amount: Coverage of Full Tuition, $20,000 Stipend

Another scholarship opportunity at Howard University is the Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowship. It is awarded to Ph.D. Students with high academic achievement and an interest in a career in the academe. Fellows of this program are interested in teaching in a college or university after completing their graduate degrees. This fellowship is awarded for one academic year only.

Applicants are reviewed based on their fellowship applications and grades. A minimum grade of 3.5 is needed to be considered for the fellowship.

A scholar of this fellowship will be required to research for 15 hours a week. The scholar must keep a minimum GPA of 3.5 to maintain the scholarship.

5. Sasakawa Young Leaders Foundation Fellowship Program

  • Scholarship Amount: Coverage of Full Tuition, $25,000 per year, $2,000 fund for research

The Sasakawa Young Leaders Foundation Fellowship Program is among the numerous Howard University scholarships that are awarded to high achieving Ph.D. Students. This fellowship award is for students enrolled in a Social Science degree. Candidates of this fellowship have a deep interest in international affairs and pursuing world peace.

Fellows are expected to conduct their research on international affairs. Candidates must have a 3.5 GPA and be enrolled full-time to their degree.

The research fund awarded to Sasakawa Fellows may cover supplies and travel expenses. Fund allocation can be determined solely by the recipient of the award.

Application for this fellowship is highly competitive. Requirements for application can be obtained from the UH website.

6. The Esther Ottley Fellowship

  • Scholarship Amount: Coverage of Full Tuition, $20,000 Stipend

The Esther Ottley Fellowship is another scholarship available at Howard University and is a support given to female doctoral students enrolled in any graduate degree program. The fellowship is merit-based and is determined by the Financial Aid Advisory Committee.

Candidates for the fellowship must have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Fellows are required to take on a 15-hour per week internship in the Graduate School while under the scholarship. Candidates with excellent leadership are given preference.

Students must complete an Esther Ottley Fellowship application form and submit three letters of recommendation. Supplemental materials may be required to complete the application.
