Ghent University Scholarships for International Students

Ghent University is one of the top 100 universities worldwide and one of the academically acclaimed universities in Belgium. Ghent University has been on the top list ever since it was founded in 1817. It is one of the largest universities located in Flanders, Belgium, that offers more than 200 courses with excellent research over various scientific domains.

Ghent University Scholarships

Masters Scholarships at Ghent University

1. Erasmus Mundus International Joint Masters Programme

  • Scholarship Amount: Up to EUR 49,000
  • Eligibility Criteria: All nationalities

The Erasmus Mundus International Joint Masters Programme is a full scholarship integrated program offered by different partnerships of international universities. This program entitles students to study in two universities in different countries. They can be awarded a joint or double degree depending on the program students apply to and their participating university.

The programs involved in the Erasmus Mundus funding are open to European and international students, and successful applicants are given on a selective basis. The program includes costs and allowances up to EUR 49,000 for a full 2-year master’s course, and the enrolment expenses are directly deducted from the scholarship. International students awarded by this Ghent University scholarship will receive a monthly allowance of EUR 1,000 and a travel allowance of up to EUR 3,000 yearly.

2. Ghent University Top-up Grants

  • Scholarship Amount: € 1000 monthly allowance + insurance
  • Eligibility Criteria: Only academically admitted students; must be in the OESO-DAC list
  • Degree Offered: Master’s

Ghent University offers Top-up Grants to students who desire to obtain a master’s degree program taught in English at Ghent.

However, this Ghent University scholarship grant has no application because it is incorporated in the typical application in obtaining admission. The selection process is highly strict because the program you would want to apply to will select the top 3 student applicants. But if you really want to voice out to be on the list, you can contact your desired study program to persuade them, and you will get a notification from them if you have succeeded. The selection criteria are as follows:

  • Applicant qualification based on the eligibility
  • No strict age limits
  • Significance of Master’s Degree to student’s country
  • Authentication of student’s background

For the academic year 2021-2022, there will be 11 scholarships that will be awarded to the select students who can receive an allowance of €1000 monthly plus an all-expense paid insurances.

3. International Course Programme (ICP)

  • Scholarship Amount: € 1000 monthly allowance + one-time payments
  • Eligibility Criteria: A resident of one of the 31 eligible countries; maximum age of 35 for initial master’s and 45 for advanced master’s
  • Degree Offered: Master’s and Advanced Master’s
  • Scholarship Link

The International master’s programs (ICPs) is a recognized master’s scholarship program consisting of 2 or 4 semesters on a specific course for sustainable development studies. Twelve scholars will be awarded for each of the 15 ICP programs.

For eligibility, you must be a resident of the 31 qualified countries and should be below 35 years of age if you take your first master’s degree and 45 years old if advanced master’s. Priority is given to student candidates employed in the academe and research, governments, and NGOs; however, candidates with no experience may still be able to apply.

In selecting shortlisted candidates, the commission will base it on motivation, professional experience, gender, country’s economic status, and social background.

PhD Scholarships at Ghent University

1. Special Research Fund- Doctoral Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: € 2,225 monthly
  • Eligibility Criteria: affiliated to a university in the Flemish Community, to the Evangelic Protestant Faculty in Leuven or the Faculty for Protestant Theology in Brussels; selection by invitation only
  • Degree Offered: PhD

Every year, Ghent University offers about 50 Doctoral scholarships through its Special Research Fund (BOF) that aims to finish within four years.

This is only open to selected students who have been invited to join a research group by a professor at Ghent University. This scholarship at Ghent University is highly competitive. Students who wished to apply for this grant must have excellent study results and professional background.

Applications must also be sent with the support of a Ghent University promoter. There are three special programs that students can choose from. These are the following:

  • BOF PhD scholarship with UNU-CRIS label
  • BOF PhD scholarship with I-SITE ULNE label
  • BOF doctoral scholarship with GUGC label

2. Special Research Fund – Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries

  • Scholarship Amount: Full-Time 2 year funding
  • Eligibility Criteria: Must reside at a developing country that is on the provide list
  • Degree Offered: PhD

Aside from the BOF grant mentioned in the above post, Ghent University also offers PhD “sandwich” scholarships to excellent PhD students residing in a developing country. Two scopes will carry out the grant: half of their PhD Research will be at Ghent University while the other half is at a university in a developing country from the South)

Ghent University only offers full financing that will be done on Ghent University within two years. The candidate will be the one who will finance himself for the last remaining years.

Candidates who wish to apply must come from a developing country listed on the selected countries. Both candidate and promoter must submit the proposals thereof at Ghent University with a supervisor from the partner university at the South.

3. Baekeland mandates: A PhD in collaboration with the industry

  • Scholarship Amount: depends on the Ghent University wage scales
  • Eligibility Criteria: All nationalities
  • Degree Offered: PhD

Baekeland mandates is a scholarship grant that supports entrepreneurship and innovation. Its focus is on a collaboration with a company. The research done with the candidate must have clear economic objectives and can help the company in the long run.

The duration of the scholarship research grants is four years but can be extended if the candidate works part-time. There is no special requirement in applying for this Ghent University scholarship, but the candidate must be affiliated with a Flemish company. The application procedures will depend if you are with the company or if you are with Ghent University.
