George Washington University is known for its large group of student volunteers. More than a thousand graduates have volunteered in non-profit organizations over the years. George Washington University offers merit-based scholarships to international undergraduate students and need-based for U.S. residents. These scholarships are renewable throughout the students’ stay in the university. For graduate students, student assistance programs are offered, such as scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships, including a monthly stipend and other benefits.

1. Presidential International Scholarship

The Presidential International Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to outstanding incoming first-year international students at George Washington University. To be selected, they must have strong academic credentials and extracurricular involvement during their high school years. Scholars will receive full-tuition coverage as part of their financial aid package. George Washington University makes this scholarship renewable for ten consecutive semesters of their undergraduate degrees provided that the scholars maintain their degree requirements and the scholarship requirements.

2. You Are Welcome Here Scholarship

George Washington University offers the You Are Welcome Here Scholarship to international undergraduate students. It is a merit-based scholarship. This scholarship aims to welcome students from diverse backgrounds, bridge the gap in cultural divides, and create a rich learning experience at the university. Candidates will answer assessments that test their competency and determination in executing the scholarship’s mission. Therefore, selected students are expected to continue this mission throughout their stay at the university; they must possess skills and interest in intercultural learning activities. In addition, they will be receiving a financial aid package that includes partial tuition fees coverage up to ten semesters of their undergraduate degrees.

  • Scholarship Amount: 10% of tuition fees

Undergraduate students, both domestic and international, at George Washington University can apply for this scholarship if they wish to further their studies (i.e. Master’s and Ph.D.). Selected students will receive a 10% reduction in their tuition fees. The Grad2Grad program is available to students in the following departments: Columbian College of Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Nursing; College of Professional Studies; Elliot School of International Affairs; Graduate School of Education and Human Development; Milken Institute School of Public Health; School of Engineering and Applied Science; and School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

4. Global Leaders Fellowship

The Global Leaders Fellowship is for students taking their master’s degrees. George Washington University awards this scholarship to students who come from diverse backgrounds. These include students mainly residing in countries like Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam. Fellows will receive a grant of $10,000 per academic year of their master’s degree as part of their financial aid package.

There are various fellowship opportunities at George Washington University. Each department has its own fellowship programs for graduate students. Financial aid packages in fellowship programs vary by department and by program; however, they will still be providing tuition fee coverage, additional student fees, living stipends, and research and dissertation writing assistance. With these fellowship programs, graduate students at George Washington University will be fully equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in their selected industry. 5. Research and Teaching Assistantships

At George Washington University, graduate students are given opportunities to apply to assistantships where they will work for no more than twenty hours a week. As compensation, they will receive monthly stipend and tuition fees coverage. There are two types of assistantships: teaching and research assistantships. Both involve assisting faculty members at the university. The difference is that in research assistantships, students will be assisting in research-related activities and projects. In contrast, in teaching assistantships, students will discuss courses, tutor undergraduate students, prepare assessments and exams, and do other administrative tasks. As a result, students will have the chance to upskill, improve their academic performance, and build up essential professional skills – all of which are part of the learning experiences of assistantships.

For example, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) offers assistantships for all doctoral and master’s students studying in their programs. Full-funded packages are given as rewards for their assistance, including full-tuition coverage and a living stipend. Master’s students will receive a grant for partial tuition fees coverage. They are required to assist faculty members in their tasks along with other graduate students. International students can also apply to CCAS’ assistantships, given that they meet the requirements, such as high TOEFL scores.
