There are two ways of applying for the scholarship: through your local Korean embassy or Chung-Ang University. However, applying through your embassy might be better as they can guide you through the application process. The documents will include but are not limited to the official application form, applicant pledge, medical test results, a letter of intent, letters of recommendation, proof of citizenship, academic transcripts, and language proficiency scores. These requirements may differ by year, university, and course, so make sure to check with the university and with the embassy if you’ve completed all requirements before submitting your application.
The Korean embassy will be reviewing your application before forwarding it to the National Institute for International Education in Korea. The Chung-Ang University Young Scientist Scholarship (CAYSS) Program was established especially for international students. It allows talented and innovative students from all over the world to conduct research at Chung-Ang University. The candidate should have an excellent academic background in Engineering, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, and/or Medicine.
To apply for this Chung-Ang scholarship, you must first obtain a recommendation from any Chung-Ang University faculty member. Look through the university faculty list to find potential academic advisers that are in your line of work or interest. You should take a look at their publications, research papers, and personal websites as well to see if they would be the right fit for you. Once you’ve chosen your option/s, contact them via e-mail with your application.
You must include ‘CAYSS’ in the e-mail’s subject line. In the body, you should discuss what your research plans are, how your skills and experiences will help you achieve your academic goals, why you are deserving of CAYSS, and what you can contribute to both the adviser and Chung-Ang University. You should also provide references (e.g. professor, academic adviser) with contact details.
If the member of faculty is interested in working with you, they will be submitting a recommendation letter to the Office of International Affairs. Chung-Ang University will then be contacting you with details on the admission process and required documents.
Compile all files and post them to the address and by the date listed on the scholarship’s webpage. Over the next few weeks, the scholarships team will be reviewing your application and contacting you for an interview. After the interview, you will be notified about the scholarship within two to three weeks.

For those majoring in Liberal Arts, Social Science, Arts and/or Physical Education, you must simply score a 70% when applying for admissions. This score may be based on your academic background, interview results, and more. Students who fulfill these conditions will have a chance at a full tuition waiver for their first year of studies. For their second, third, and fourth years, the scholarship is partially renewable. Those who achieve a 4.3 GPA and above for the year will receive a 50% tuition waiver, while those who achieve a GPA of 3.3 to 4.3 will get a 30% tuition waiver.
Those majoring in Natural Science, Engineering, Medicine, and/or Pharmacy, on the other hand, have a more complicated set of criteria. Students with TOPIK Level 5 may get a 70% tuition waiver, while those who score an 80% admissions score may get a 50% tuition waiver. The scholarship may also be fully or partially renewable for the remaining years if the student achieves a minimum GPA of 3.3.
