Chinese University of Hong Kong Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at Chinese University of Hong Kong

1. Admission Scholarships for Non-Local Students

  • Scholarship Amount: Ranging from HK$5,000 to full coverage of tuition fees, with an allowance of up to HK$45,000 per year
  • Eligibility Criteria: International students who meet the general admission requirements of CUHK

International students who fulfill the general requirements are automatically considered by the university for the Admission Scholarship offered by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Qualified candidates must have secondary school qualifications, including (but not limited to) a high school diploma, SAT/ACT test results, and English language proficiency exam results. The minimum scores required for admission to the university are the following: 6.0 for IELTS, 80 for TOEFL Internet-based Test, 590 for SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing, and 23 for ACT Combined English/Writing.

2. The Belt and Road Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Full tuition fee coverage with a bursary of HK$50,000 per year
  • Eligibility Criteria: 1st year undergraduate students from countries along the Belt and Road regions and other foreign countries

Sponsored by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government Scholarship Fund, the Belt and Road Scholarship aims to attract students from all Belt and Road countries to pursue higher education in any university in Hong Kong. The scholarship covers the awardees’ tuition fees and is now open to research postgraduates as well.

Students are not required to apply for this Chinese University of Hong Kong scholarship. Qualified candidates will be nominated by CUHK to the Education Bureau before announcing the final list of awardees.

3. CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$50,000 (non-renewable)
  • Eligibility Criteria: 1st year undergraduate students enrolled at CUHK

This scholarship is awarded annually to 8 undergraduate students who are chosen for their excellent academic and extracurricular credentials. Their college entrance results, language proficiency test results, and leadership/community service experience are the primary requirements for the scholarship.

Scholarship details are announced every October, and qualified students are subsequently nominated by the university.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Chinese University of Hong Kong

1. Postgraduate Studentships

  • Scholarship Amount: HK$216,300
  • Eligibility Criteria: Postgraduate students doing full-time research at CUHK
  • Degree Offered: MPhil and PhD

CUHK aims to meet the financial needs of postgraduate students who will be pursuing full-time research at the university. They will receive monthly stipends and fulfill several research and teaching duties for CUHK’s Centre for Chinese Studies.

Postgraduate students are not required to apply for this scholarship at Chinese University of Hong Kong. They will be automatically considered and invited along with the admission offer from the university.

2. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

  • Scholarship Amount: Monthly stipend of HK$26,900 and conference travel allowance of HK$13,500 per year (renewable for 3 years)
  • Eligibility Criteria: PhD students with outstanding academic and extracurricular credentials

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is founded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council to entice students to pursue a PhD program in any recognized universities in Hong Kong.

To apply for this scholarship available at Chinese University of Hong Kong, students must submit an initial application to the Research Grants Council. The initial application form can be found here.

After the initial application, applicants will be given a reference number. This number will then be used to submit the full application to CUHK. Full applications must be submitted to the Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes on or before December 1.

Applicants are also required to upload scanned copies of the following documents: university graduation certificate, transcript of records, language proficiency test results, 2 recommendation letters, and valid ID. Supporting documents may also be required by the university if deemed necessary.
