Chinese Government Scholarships for International Students

The Chinese Scholarship Council presently provides CSC Scholarships, commonly known as Chinese Government Scholarships (CGS), to foreign students studying in Chinese institutions associated with them. Students are given the opportunity to take bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs at any Chinese university of their choice, all of which are fully funded under the CGS program.

Should foreign students want to apply for a scholarship, there are more than 274 Chinese schools that offer such scholarship programs.

Chinese Government Scholarship Deadlines

The deadline for Chinese Government Scholarships applications is typically in December. The application deadlines typically occur in April or soon after the spring festival.

How do I apply for Chinese Government Scholarships?

An appropriate procedure for application should be followed.

Every candidate should find a university that offers the program they desire and check its affiliation with the scholarship program.

They should contact the university and apply for admission. A candidate can request a letter of acceptance after they have been authorized.

After that, log in to CSC and fill out a Chinese Government Scholarship online registration form. When medical records are requested, attach them. Lastly, print the required documents and keep them safe.

A list of documents of candidates must be submitted to the online portal.

First is the copy of the passport’s front page. A clear scanned copy of the applicant’s ordinary passport with a validity date should be provided. The candidate should apply for a new passport before applying if the validity of the current passport does not meet the criteria.

Second is the notarized highest diploma. Those who are seeking to acquire a diploma must provide official evidence of their current school’s student status. Notarized Chinese or English translations must be appended to documents authored in languages other than Chinese or English.

Third on the list are academic transcripts. Non-Chinese or English transcripts must be supported by verified Chinese or English translations. An applicant also needs a Chinese or English study plan or research proposal. Pre-requisites for the study plan or research proposal would be that undergraduates should write 200 words, non-degree students 500 words, and postgraduates 800 words.

Fourth are the letters of reference. Graduate and senior scholar applicants must submit two letters of recommendation (can be from professors or associate professors) in either Chinese or English. For students in music studies, candidates are expected to submit their compositions. Applicants for fine arts programs must submit two sketches, two color paintings, and two extra works in addition to their application.

Fifth is the foreigner physical examination form. Applicants who wish to remain in the country for more than 6 months must submit a photocopy of the completed Foreigner Physical Examination Form in English. The applicants should retain the original form by saving the original copy. The Chinese quarantine authority developed the form, which may be acquired from the dispatching authority.

All of the items on the Foreigner Physical Examination Form must be covered during the physical exams. Documents that are incomplete, as well as those that do not have the signature of the attending physician, hospital’s stamp, or a sealed picture of the applicant, will be marked ineligible.

Sixth is the pre-admission letter (if applicable). Applicants who have obtained a pre-admission letter from one of the approved schools should include it in their application package; however, a pre-admission letter from a Chinese university is unnecessary. Applications with a pre-admission letter will directly be sent to the institutions for approval of the application.

Applications that do not contain pre-admission letters will be sent to universities for consideration. For candidates who do not have a pre-admission letter, the Chinese Scholarship Council cannot promise that the host university will be one of their top choices because the institutions’ capacity and the applicant’s eligibility will be taken into consideration.

Seventh is a certificate of linguistic competence. Applicants who have a valid HSK Certificate (valid for two years) should include it with their application. Additionally, applicants who have a valid IELTS or TOEFL certificate (valid for two years) should include it in their application package.

Lastly, a report on the non-criminal background. The applicant must provide a valid certificate of non-criminal record from the local public security agency, which must be issued within 6 months of the application’s submission date.
