Boston University Scholarships for International Students

Founded in 1893, Boston University is a private research university in Massachusetts. Despite being a non-sectarian educational institution, BU has an affiliation with Methodists, with it being founded by them when the university was established in Vermont. With over 33,500 world-class students, 10,000 faculty and staff, and state-of-the-art facilities, Boston University seeks to provide innovative solutions to today’s problems as a leading global research institution. Here, we will be looking at some of the best scholarships at Boston University for international students.

Home to famous icons, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Boston University prides itself on its vigorous and dauntless continuous pursuit of knowledge. The university has been granted over $500 million for its research expenditures. It is a member of the Association of American Universities, an elite organization of leading research universities in the United States and Canada.

Boston University has 1,772 laboratories, 17 schools, and colleges with over 300 programs in various disciplines, including arts, health, sciences, engineering, data science, and many more.

Boston University Scholarships

Boston University grants scholarships to international students. However, there are only limited merit-based scholarships offered to undergraduate international students. In general, international students should have outstanding academic records to become eligible candidates. In addition, international students should submit documents containing funds available for study costs, such as savings deposits, checking accounts, etc. Below are the available scholarships, financial aids, and funding for undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. international students.

1. Trustee Scholarship

The Trustee Scholars Program is Boston University’s most prestigious scholarship. Only 20 students are welcomed to the program every year. Scholars of this program have a perfect 4.0 GPA in high school and are top of their classes. Boston University encourages its scholars to become intellectual, creative, adventurous, and well-rounded. Through these qualities and characteristics, BU believes that its scholars will achieve excellence beyond the usual.

A Trustee Scholarship is one of the only two scholarships that accept international students as their candidates. It covers the full tuition fee of undergraduate degree programs, additional student fees and is renewable for four years if the scholars maintain their academic requirements. Aspiring applicants are required to write an essay on the Common or Coalition Application.

2. Presidential Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $25,000 annually

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to incoming first-year students with exceptional academic achievement and credentials. International students are also eligible for this merit scholarship. It is for undergraduate studies that can be renewed for up to four years. It covers $25,000 of the tuition fee. Unlike the Trustee Scholarship, the Presidential Scholarship does not require an essay or application form. Presidential scholars are among the outstanding students at Boston University.

3. Lu Lingzi Scholarship

The Lu Lingzi Scholarship Fund was created in honor of Lu Lingzi, a Boston University community member who tragically died during the Boston Marathon bombing attack in 2013. She was a student who passed her master’s comprehensive exam. The Boston University Board of Trustees, the Boston University community, and other individuals gave generous gifts in hopes of keeping Lu’s memory alive through this scholarship fund. This scholarship was created to help international students who wish to further their studies through a master’s degree at BU.

Preference will be given to academically excellent students from China; however, outstanding international students from other countries are still eligible for the scholarship. Aspiring applicants must show good academic standing and have lawful immigration status. They should also not have any work-related activities or significant commitments outside the campus.

Two of these scholarships will be created by the fund from generous donors. In addition, another scholarship will be given every year to a successful candidate. The Lu Lingzi Scholarships will cover the full tuition and provide an annual stipend for two years or the entire duration of the degree.

4. William V. Shanno Memorial Fellowship

Shannon was a respected professor at Boston University. From 1977 to 1981, he served as the Ambassador of Ireland after being appointed by President Jimmy Carter. He was also an editorial member at the New York Times for almost a decade.

The William V. Shannon Memorial Fellowship was created in memory of Ambassador William V. Shannon. It covers up to the full tuition fee of graduate studies for outstanding international students from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This Boston University scholarship can also be used to support research expenditures, events, and lectures. If interested, applicants should inform the Boston University departments before applying.

5. Ph.D. Funding

Boston University offers funding packages for its Ph.D. students. Each program in the university’s schools/colleges has a specific financial aid that covers tuition fees, additional student fees, and provides living stipends.

For example, the School of Medicine offers a financial aid package for incoming first-year Ph.D. students of the Graduate Medical Sciences. The financial aid packages are fully funded through training grants, departments, programs, and faculty research grants. In addition, students with good academic standing can receive full tuition coverage, additional student fees, $36,782 living stipends, and health insurance. Other fellowships, scholarships, and grants are also available through individual departments in the School of Medicine.
