The University of Canterbury is the second-oldest university in New Zealand. Located in the southern region of New Zealand in the largest city of Christchurch, it is one of the country’s top public research universities. It offers a total of 147 undergraduate degrees and 61 graduate degrees, and students can choose to either study one specific degree, work on two separate degrees simultaneously, or combine two degrees into one.

The University of Canterbury is home to a considerable number of international students. It boasts of a vibrant student community that is inclusive and diverse. Each year, the University of Canterbury opens its doors to international students from all over the world and offers various scholarships to welcome them to the school and New Zealand.

University of Canterbury Scholarships for International Students

Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of Canterbury

1. Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: up to $15,000 for tuition and maintenance fees
  • Eligibility Criteria
    • must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in their second, third, or fourth year at the University of Canterbury
    • must be a citizen of eligible Asian countries as stated here

Eamon Molloy was an advocate for foreigners looking to find better lives in New Zealand. A member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a devout Catholic, he dedicated his life to serving others and, in particular, took care of overseas students unfamiliar with the New Zealand way of life. Not only did he help these students settle into society, but he also made sure that they were accepted. After he died in 2009, the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship was established by former students who wanted to keep honoring his legacy.

This University of Canterbury scholarship is offered to students coming from the Indo-Chinese region of Asia. A full list of eligible countries can be found on the scholarship’s official webpage.

Application for the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship is conducted online. The link to the form will be available on the scholarship webpage for at least eight weeks before the submission deadline. Before you can apply for the scholarship, you must have already been accepted into the second, third, or fourth year of your degree. Without this confirmation, you will not be qualified for the scholarship.

You must upload several documents along with your online application form. These include transcripts of records, a letter of motivation, your statement of purpose, reference letters from instructors and employers, and CV standardized test scores.

The scholarship is awarded based on exceptional academic merit, financial needs, and the candidate’s motivation. It’s highly recommended that you detail what makes you deserving and how the scholarship will help you achieve your long-term goals. Only one scholarship is awarded annually, so please take advantage of the letter of motivation and statement of purpose. You may also be asked for an interview if you have been shortlisted.

The Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship will be presented by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury, a representative of the Molloy family, and representatives of the scholarship donors.

2. UC International First Year Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: between $10,000 and $20,000
  • Eligibility Criteria
    • must have been accepted for their first year at the University of Canterbury
    • must be a full-time international student paying overseas fees

Every year, the University of Canterbury awards a maximum of twenty-five International First Year Undergraduate Scholarships. These are targeted towards students demonstrating superb academic skills and potential and are set to enroll for their first year at the University of Canterbury.

Application for the UC International First Year Undergraduate Scholarship is done online. The link will be uploaded on the first-year scholarships webpage and will remain open for at least eight weeks before the submission deadline. You should have already been offered admission to the University of Canterbury before applying for the scholarship.

Besides filling out the standard application form, where you will be asked for general information like your personal details and educational background, you will also need to upload some supporting documents. These will include proof of citizenship or residence, such as a passport or birth certificate; financial records like bank statements that prove your need for the scholarship; a list of referees and professional reference letters, and evidence of educational and employment history, such as certificates of training and grade transcripts, among others. Requirements vary by year and by degree, so just prepare any other documents you feel may also be helpful for the application.

The value of this scholarship available at the University of Canterbury will be determined by the applicant’s academic achievements, leadership skills and, community involvement, and financial needs. The value can either be $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000. It will be awarded by the Vice-Chancellor, Director of Student Services and Communication, and other university staff.

Winners of the UC International First Year Undergraduate Scholarships may be asked to participate in university activities like student mentoring and advertising the university.

Postgraduate Scholarships at the University of Canterbury

1. University of Canterbury Alumni Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $5000
  • Eligibility Criteria: must be enrolled in their final year for an Honour’s degree or enrolled for a postgraduate degree at the University of Canterbury
  • Scholarship Link

The University of Canterbury Alumni Scholarship is the postgraduate counterpart of the UC International First Year Undergraduate Scholarship. It is an award granted by the University of Canterbury to students studying the final year of their Honour’s degree or taking up a postgraduate degree. It has a value of up to $5000 and should be used for tuition fees.

The application for the University of Canterbury Alumni Scholarship follows the same process. Sometime in June, a link to the online application form will be posted on the university’s official website. There, you may fill out this form and upload the documents needed to support your application. These include a letter of motivation, statement of purpose, comprehensive resume, and professional reference letters, among others. Some degrees also have additional entry requirements, so you need to make sure you qualify for those as well. You will have until mid-August to submit both the application and supporting documents.

This University of Canterbury scholarship will be awarded according to the applicant’s academic records and community involvement. Having values aligned with the objectives of the University of Canterbury is also important. All winners will have their stories and photos published on the university’s official website, so you must make a good impression on the scholarship team.
