The history of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (Maynooth University) dates back to 1795. They were first known as St. Patrick’s College Maynooth, the largest seminary in the world at the time. Through the decades, to cater to other educational fields, MU continuously expanded until they were formally established as Maynooth University in 1997 under the Universities Act. They are now recognized as one of the nation’s fastest-growing universities. Here, we will be looking at Maynooth University scholarships for international students.

MU offers undergraduate to postgraduate degrees as well as international programs, with a strong focus on humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. They also have 12 research institutes, aimed at actioning on their mission of solving global issues and contributing to the advancement of human knowledge. Outside academics, Maynooth University places just as equal importance on sports, clubs, and other extra-curricular activities that will further enhance their students’ overall university life.

Maynooth University Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships at Maynooth University

1. Sports Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: Coverage of sports-related expenses
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • All undergraduate and postgraduate students
    • Students athletes who compete on a national or international level

Sports scholarships are open to students at Maynooth University to support their sports-related expenses while they pursue their studies. Athletes who compete on a national or international level and who are able to meet the grade requirements are eligible to apply. Only certain sports are covered by the scholarship however, an exception may be granted depending on the student’s level of expertise. Postgraduate athletes are also considered on a case-to-case basis.

The deadline for this Maynooth University scholarship is every 1st of April annually. Selected scholars will receive funding to cover their sports-related expenses such as equipment and travel. Part-time work commitments in school will also be minimized so they can focus on their practices and academics. Many other non-material benefits are also included such as access to facilities, coaching, and priority to on-campus accommodation on their first year. Renewals are granted on the basis of successful sporting and academic performance.

2. Government of Ireland – International Education Scholarships

    • Full tuition exemption
    • EUR 10,000 stipend
  • Eligibility Criteria: Undergraduate and postgraduate students from non-EU/EEU countries

The Government of Ireland established its International Education Scholarships (GOI-IES) to promote Ireland as a destination for quality education and research. Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. students from non-EU/EEU countries are welcome to apply for a one-year study period in a partner Irish institution.

Applications are submitted online and selection is made upon assessment of the candidates’ academic and personal achievements, communication skills, and interest in pursuing their studies in Ireland. Successful awardees of this scholarship available at Maynooth University will receive a one-time stipend amounting to EUR 10,000 and full tuition and other registration costs coverage.

3. Erasmus+ Exchange Program

Erasmus+ is one of the most well-known programs in the UK that supports students in academics, training, and sports. The program allows its constituents to take part in exchange programs with different European partner institutions.

Students who are keen to study in MU through Erasmus+ must be nominated by their home institution. If the nomination is accepted, the candidate will receive a notification from Maynooth University with further details on how to apply. Erasmus+ is a one-semester or one-year exchange program that will cover all the student’s tuition and registration expenses. Grades incurred during the exchange will be credited to the scholar’s home university when they get back.

Postgraduate Scholarships at Maynooth University

1. Taught Master’s Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount: EUR 2,000
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • EU and non-EU students
    • Must have obtained at least a 2.1 honors undergraduate degree
  • Degree Offered: Master’s

The Taught Master’s Scholarship at MU is open to outstanding EU and non-EU candidates who have achieved at least a 2.1 honors undergraduate degree. Applications for the scholarship are submitted alongside the candidate’s application for admission in any Master’s field of study in the university. MU will grant EUR 2,000 to the awardees.

2. John & Pat Hume Doctoral Awards

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • Full fees coverage
    • Up to EUR 20,500 award
    • Up to EUR 18,500 stipend/year
    • Up to EUR 2,000 research allowance
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Must hold a first-class or upper second-class honors Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
    • All Ph.D. candidates of any nationality
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

The John & Pat Hume Doctoral Awards was established in honor of late alumnus John, who made significant contributions to Ireland, and his wife Pat Hume. Scholarships are awarded each year to exceptional doctoral candidates who presented the best research proposal and academic reputation amongst all candidates.

If selected, the awardees will receive this Maynooth University scholarship that will cover their tuition fees throughout their stay at the university. An additional monetary award, research allowance, and annual stipend are also provided. The exact amount of the award will depend on the scholar’s ranking upon the final selection of all grantees. Continuation of the scholarship each year is conditional– the student must maintain their good academic standing.

3. Maynooth University Departmental Doctoral Scholarships

  • Scholarship Amount:
    • Full tuition coverage
    • Maintenance award of EUR 10,000/year
  • Eligibility Criteria: Must have a first-class or 2.1 honors in their primary degree or a Master’s degree
  • Degree Offered: Ph.D.

Full-time Ph.D. students can apply for a scholarship offered by MU to support their school finances All students who hold a first-class or 2.1 honors in their primary degree or those with a Master’s diploma are eligible for the scholarship. To apply, the candidate must submit their application form including their personal statement, CV, research proposal, and transcripts. Selection will be made by the Head of Department/Institute.

The chosen scholars will be exempt from the payment of their full tuition and will receive an annual maintenance award amounting to EUR 10,000. As part of the scholarship program, the grantees will need to participate in academic activities and will be required to partake in teaching duties for 240 hours yearly.
