Umma University is the first Islamic institution of higher education in Kenya. It was initially founded in 1998 as the Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies and gained charter status in 2013. The main university campus is in Kajiado County, and its two study centers are in Garissa and Mombasa.

As an Islamic university, it offers a holistic approach to education. In addition to academic excellence, its students are trained to hone their individual talents and moral principles, instill the value of hard work, and foster competitive skills.
