Polotsk State University is a public university located in the new industrial town of Novopolotsk and the historic town of Polotsk. The modern history of the university can be traced back to 1968 in Novopolotsk, where there was a need for engineers and technical specialists. Initially a polytechnic institute, it transformed over the years and became Polotsk State University (PSU) in 1993. It was named so because Polotsk has a rich centuries-long history of education, notably the Jesuit College founded in 1581. Although the historical institute underwent many changes and closures, the historical campuses of this former center for education were transferred to PSU and restored in 2005. PSU has continued to grow over the years and now offers undergraduate and graduate programs in various specialties.
