Oglethorpe University is a private university located in Brook Haven, Georgia. Founded in 1834, it has a long history of nearly 200 years and was ruled by Presbyterianism at the time, making it the earliest religious institution in the South. Oglethorpe University closed twice because of the American Civil War, and later financial difficulties, but after reorganization, it regained its name in 1972 and is now actively operating. Currently, the university is located in the U.S. Historic District, where the U.S. has registered with the state.
