Madonna University Nigeria, a private, multi-campus Catholic university, was established in Okija; however, its main campus is in Elele. It has one other campus in Enugu. Founded in 1999 by the Very Rev. Fr. Professor E.M.P. Edeh, it is the first private Catholic University in the West African sub-region and the first such university approved by the Nigerian government. The university’s name also reflects its Catholic origin, as the word “Madonna” is an Italian term that translates into “Our Lady,” referring to the Virgin Mary.
