Starting as an all-girls school named Elizabeth McRae Institute and became coeducational once it became Lees–McRae College in 1931. The college celebrates and continues its long tradition of honoring its Appalachian heritage. The school has served for more than 100 years and now provides undergraduate and graduate level programs through on-campus teaching or online/distance learning.
