The oldest, most renowned university in Pueblo de Zaragoza is Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla. This institution may also be known as the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla in English. At its roots, the BUAP was a Catholic academic institution as it was established by the Jesuits or the Society of Jesus. However, since 1825, the congregation has lost control of the university. Through several centuries, the once humble college grew into an internationally acclaimed university, ranking places in various global assessments.
